I've got my plan almost down for what I'm going to buy when I make the big switch in a few weeks.

Here's what I've got planned to buy (education discount):
    • MacBook: 2.0 GHz White - $1,199
    • -1 GB RAM Upgrade - $90
    • iPod Nano 2 GB - $179
    • -Rebate - ($179)
    • Canon PIXMA iP5200 - $149.95
    • -Rebate - ($100)
    • Brenthave Edge I - $49.95
    • Refubished AirPort Express Base Station with AirTunes - $99
    • JBL Creature II White (from Amazon) - $65.80

I don't really want to spend much more money, and the only upgrade I'm considering is the 80GB HDD, which would be $45. I will be using the MacBook mainly for browsing the Internet, a bit of word processing, a bit of video editing (probably with iMovie).

Also, I'm using the AirPort with AirTunes in my room to extend my wireless network (currently using a Netgear WGR614 v4), allow me to stream to the Creature IIs using AirTunes, and allow me to print wirelessly to the Canon PIXMA (I'm currently checking compatibility in the Peripherals forum). The AP Express Base Station can tie in to my existing wireless network, right? Also, will I be able to share files and printers within the wireless network? Here's a diagram of what I'm proposing:

Netgear WGR614 v4 Wireless Router <---> AirPort Express Base Station
    |----------------------------------------------|----------|
    |----------------------------------------------|----------|
    |----------------------------------------------|----------|
    |----------------------------------------------|----------|
    v----------------------------------------------v----------v
    PC-----------------------------------------MacBook---Canon PIXMA Printer
    |
    |
    |
    v
    Epson USB Printer

I know, it's about as clear as mud, but it's the best I could do. Further questions are welcome.

    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will do all of that and more. No rebooting, constant configuring and craziness like your Netgear probably does

Personally, the extra $45 isn't worth it to me. It's far overpriced (>$2/GB??) and isn't as important as you may think. Look at your current disk usage and see if it would do you better to have more or less. You can always easily archive old projects/documents off to CDs or DVDs.

    Cheers

    • I will just order 2GB of ram from 18004memory.com or another company for about $165 instead of paying $90 for 1GB. Also if you plan on installing XP for school I will go with the HD upgrade. ALso since you plan to do video editing might need a bigger HD or an external.

Good luck you will enjoy the macbook.

I remember reading somewhere that few (maybe even none of) Netgear base stations are capable of working with Airport Express to extend range. Linksys is usually the base stations people have more luck with and even then you need to upgrade OS or firmware on the base station. However, if you use Airport-Express for only for AirTunes, it would probably be OK. I don't know about using it as wireless print server.
