So, Palm announced the new Palm TX handheld recently and it looks very nice to me. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability, plus a nice hi-res screen for $299.

I checked at my local CompUSA store yesterday but they didn't have any on display yet. I'm reading some of the initial reviews on line, but was wondering if anyone here has seen one of these suckers live yet (or even better, has bought one and can give their impressions)?

Just from looking at data sheets, the new iPod has a better LCD.

It looked good in person--expensive--but I'm concerned about what's cheaper about it, considering that it has both WiFi and Bluetooth and a large display.

I also saw one of the blue Zire 72s with most of the blue scratched away. I'd hate to think that this one would lose its exterior paint as well.

Its probably because you write (with a stylus) on the Palm displays and you don't on the iPod's.

Not yet, though I was seriously considering the Palm TX for the Wifi browsing and email. It would great for casual browsing and email around the house or office, without the need for the laptop. Unfortunately the two main IM apps I use (Skype & MSN) aren't available for the Palm devices (that I'm aware of).

The other crunch point for me is paying for Calendar/Contacts functionality that I already use a lot of on my Nokia 6600 and wouldn't use so much on the PDA - since the Mobile phone comes with me just about everywhere, but a PDA wouldn't.

The blue zire 72 has a rubber type of paint coating on it. That is why it can peel off. The Palm TX does not have this same rubber (non-slip) coating, so it wont peel.

    Yes.
True. I hadn't thought about using it for IM or IRC or anything. The absence of those wouldn't be a showstopper for me, but it would be a bonus if some decent software were in fact available.
I get what you're saying, but I can't imagine the presence of the Calendar and Contacts software on the Palm TX influences its price much, one way or the other. ;)

For what it's worth, I currently have a Zire 31 that I've had for about a year now and AFAICT none of the paint has scratched off -- and I use it pretty much every day. I guess it may just depend on how abusive you are. ;)

How long is it going to take before these portables get 802.11g or A, after using Airport EX b seems slow.
