Just be advised that it's illegal to download games for which you do not own the cartridge.

EDIT: Actually, not true. See my post below.

It's illegal to have them full stop, though countries offer variations on this. backing up data etc, you're allowed to do. So if you ripped it yourself you are fine. According to Nintendo Legal you can't link to emulators or roms so it'll be PM or "go to google" time.

You can pick up the more popular NES games for the GBA. They're very cheap.

Well where does one get the games. I don't mind paying for them but I can't use cartridges. I was hoping for downloadable versions, preferably legal mind you.

In a couple of months Nintendo will have it's new machine out where you'll legally be able to download and play retro games.

To clarify, I don't want to buy anything like a game system. I just wanted to play a few oldies for fun a few times. Is there a way to do this on my imac g5 w/o any external device?

Thanks for all the help so far.

No legal way, until the Wii comes out, or you buy the re-release NES classics games for gameboy advance, or play the NES games in animal crossing...

How you would theoretically back up your own games is by using a cartridge copying device which were available way back at the time the NES was around, made by dubious chinese bootleggers. again questionable legality depending on where in the world you are. and theres little to no chance of finding one nowadays.

There are a ton of solutions to emulation on the Mac. Here ya go for the NES.

    http://emulation.victoly.com/nintendo/

    I recommend Nestopia.
I will say that ROMs are very easy to find over the net, and ROMs do not have to be for a particular OS, meaning that any NES ROMs you find will work on your Mac.

Actually, since it's illegal to transfer your backups, it's illegal to download them too. The only way to legally obtain them is to rip the rom off your own cartridge.

It's not that we don't want to help. It's simply illegal -- period.

    Link to Nintendo Legal.

I thought I edited my post before anyone could quote what I said. Oh well.
Don't tell anyone I gave that link. The Feds are already looking for me for downloading Metallica songs off of Macster back in 1999.

actually i have an NES, SNES, and N64 emulator and corresponding ROMS at my home computer, but that's at home, and now i'm at work. i'd recommend just doing a google search for them, but they're definitley out there. now that i recall, i had problems when i switched to 10.4 a year ago in that they stopped working; maybe they've been fixed with the later 10.4 updates as i haven't played them in a while.

wait for Wii. Emulators are frustrating from what I hear. I can't wait to use the virtual console just to have everything in one place.

You hear wrong. They are so simple (SNES, NES, Genesis, etc.). The N64 one isn't that easy as it doesn't work too well. But the older generations work great with very little effort. And if you have a gamepad then you are set to go!

Just a few minor corrections there -
N64 compatibility isn't 100%. not even Sega can get 100% perfect emulation of the Mega Drive sound chip (as they mention in Sonic Gem Collection). I know you mentioned gamepad, but playing classics on a keyboard is about the most sacrilege thing you could do to them. next to downloading them online :p
