Iam trying to help a friend who is using mac os 8 and aol 4.
I have tried sending *.jpg files from earthlink on my pc. PentiumIII and XP.
She has not been able to open the attached files or view inserted pictures. We are both in our 70s but my friend is not so computer savvy, Does anyone have any ideas about how this problem can be solved?
I have sent a link to this site so my friend can also find answers to her problems.
This info could be a tremendous help.
    Thanks, Potter

You need to be a little clearer about what you are trying to do. You mention Earthlink and AOL. Are you connecting to AOL through Earthlink? By that, I mean are you using AOL as your email program? If you are using AOL as your email program, then that may be the problem. If I remember correctly, AOL 4.0's used the Stuffit (*.sit) file format to compress attachments. Most Windows machines can't decompress *.sit files. Your Windows friends need to download and install Aladdin Expander to read *.sit files. It is free. If indeed you are using Earthlink are your Internet provider, I recommend that you use your Earthlink email account. You will have to switch to a standards-based client like Eudora. We can be of more help to you if you tell us how you are connected to the Internet and how AOL comes into the picture.

Earthlink on xp to mac os8 and aol v 4

I send pictures from Adobe photoshop Album 2 through my earthlink total access 2004 to aol v.4 on a mac os 8. Adobe send the pictures in a small form. One of my kids uss aol on xp and has no problems. My friend and I are in our 70s but I seem to be able to use my computer better rthan my friend can use her MAC, I in fact taught her as much as I could and when we were close neighbors she was able to open jpg files. But now I am 3000 miles away and I know she is getting very frustrated. I just thought some one on the forum might be able to help or at the very least let me know where I could find info that might be of use. Thanks for your interest. Potter

You have to understand that AOL 4.0 is ancient. The version that your kids use on Windows XP is probably AOL 9.0, which is much newer and more compatible with Internet standards. This is not a fault with the Macintosh or an advantage for Windows XP. It is merely the expected advantage that youth has over experience. As a first attempt at a solution, I would recommend that your AOL 4.0 using friend upgrade to the most recent version of AOL 5.x. I believe that it is compatible with MacOS 8. She should be able to install it from any of those AOL CD's that she has lying around the house. The CD may advertise AOL 9.0 Optimized, but it should also contain the latest versions for MacOS 8/9 and MacOS X 10.x.
