Cheerios for Apple. This will prevent Apple Corps from filing frivolous lawsuits.

Interesting to note that it doesn't work in Camino (my main browser), only Safari.

Names or images that are not yet officially registered use the temporary ™ moniker. When a registered trademark is finally granted, the ™ switches to ®. A whole lot of "Find and Replace" is then ensued.

But I'm wondering along with dornoforpyros. Why is this being done just now?

The only thing Apple is doing is updating their current trademark.
The Apple logo with all the funky colors is now being "abandoned"
and Apple is going with a solid color Apple, probably Black or White.

But now Apple has been using that type of logo for quite some time, and they are registering it.

Certain character numbers in Unicode are reserved for the manufacturer of the font to run on. Anyone know what 63743 is on any other OS?

It was done 30 years ago...they first patented the apple logo in 1978. What this is is filing the trademark for usage under a new class, namely, the stuff outlined under the "International Class 041" section in the article. The logo has been trademarked for use with computer hardware and software, along with many other uses, for many years. This is simply asserting their right to use the logo in other contexts for initiatives they've started to pursue more recently.
