Not sure if this has been posted before, but Apple is now officially offering support for MacBook Pros with the whine issue here.

Too bad they don't give a little more information other then contact applecare. Mine whines occasionally but its much easier to open photo booth once a week when it happens then to drive to an apple store and send it away to get fixed

It might be nice if this was cross-posted on the other two Hardware Forums who do not regularly hit this one...

how 'bout macbooks? Why is there only love for the pro model?

and what are they doing about it? Shall we take the fact that they acknowledge it to mean that they actually know how to fix it now?

What if I don't have applecare and am no longer within the first 90 days? Would I have to pay some sort of fee just to talk to the support?

I'm sure the people on the phone would tell you to send it in to get your logic board replaced.

Lucky me, though - I have a faulty logic board so I need it replaced anyway!

Hopefully when I get it back after vacation* it'll be fast, won't lag like it does now, and won't make a sound! I hope it'll be cooler though.

Except for one thing - I had the logic board replaced once already, but it didn't show up on the receipt thingy they gave me, so I figure they didn't change it and they forgot it or something. But ever since I got it back the MBP feels like it runs cooler.

(*I have about 480 posts and I'm posting as fast as I can to get to 500 before I leave on Saturday. I want an avatar! :) )

I'm going to call today and ask them a) if they are acknowledging the problem on macbooks, and b) what their fix is.

If their answers are a) yes, and b) new logic board, I will send my macbook to them for repair. I need a new logic board anyway because of random shutdowns.

If they have not yet acknowledged the problem on macbooks I'll try to hold off on the repair until they do so that I don't have to have my logic board replaced twice.

I'll post back here with what they say...

If you've got a MacBook Pro, you're still under AppleCare. Standard AppleCare lasts for one year after the purchase date, so you'll still be covered. You won't need to pay a fee to talk to support. You can call them up and they'll help you out.

I sent mine in for the whine (the lady at the other end was nice but sounded like she had never heard about the problem before  ) and it should be arriving today or tommorow. I'll let you all know if AC actually took care of it.

Actually, no. We prefer, whenever possible, to have one thread per subject. Of course, we mods are few and the threads are many, but we actively discourage cross-posting.

What happens if you have a 1.83Gh MBP? Do they upgrade it to 2.0?

why would they? They are just going to replace the logic board. They shouldn't have to change your processor.

Perhaps because that processor is sauldered to the logic board, non-removable. So if apple is only able to have 2.0ghz chips now, they would replace it with that. But I highly doubt it, I'm sure they have plenty of 1.83 chips in stock.

I bought my MBP over a week ago with the whine. I took it to the apple store where they sent it for a LB replacement. It arrived yesterday (after a week) with the same whine, albeit slightly less noticeable, but noticeable nonetheless. After reading the article today I called AppleCare directly. The guy was very helpful. I will be sending my machine back for repairs now, I know the "whine" can be fixed! Patience...

The noise isn't really an issue for me I would like to know if the mbp runs cooler with the new logic board and if it gives better performance.

Wrong, Applecare only lasts 90 days from date of purchase. Standard warranty however lasts for 1 year.

The disgraceful thing is even under warranty, you have to pay Apple (as in give them your CC# details) to listen to your problem, after they issued their threats of how you will be charged if it is not a hardware problem, only then will they address your issues and send you an authorisation to send your machine down to a service centre.

wouldn't count on it. Apple is still selling 1.83 Ghz macbooks, so they should have plenty of those chips on hand.

Unacceptable, the product shouldn't have been defective from the start. I don't care if they're offering to fix it. That's a fantastic gesture on their part, but it only proves that they were producing a defective product, which is plain and out right unacceptable.

No, it shouldn't have been defective from the start, but it was. Given that, what would you have them do except fix it and try to do better next time?
