    *Sigh*

    Of course it's doubled. It's on sale in over 20 countries on better contractual terms than the v1.0 was. If it hadn't gone up that would have been a disaster.

    In other news sales have decreased by a third from Q3 2008 and Mobile OSX has, as expected, fallen back behind WinMo.

    Much ado about nothing I'm afraid.

    IE is horrid but then I don't know many WinMo users who bother with it - most use Opera which is pretty awesome.

    The iPhone will do fine but it's kind of reached its peak in terms of where it's going in the market.

    You mean that the iPhone's market share will not increase further?

    (Hopefully most Windows Mobile users switch to Opera, but I have the feeling most people, in any situation, will stick with the default and ask no questions.)

    Yeah, I think it's gone about as far as it's going to go in terms of market share. Of course, it's done pretty well so no real complaints there.

    As for IE; Samsung and others are actually making Opera the default because mobile IE really is that awful.

    No way! The iPhone is going to get a lot better and increase it's share in the market even more!

    What's the data for this? All reports to date have indicated increasing market share with no real sign of inflection... It seems the current majors and up-and-comers (RIM, Apple, Samsung, and HTC in particular) will continue to see market share gains. More to the point it seems that the recent market changes driven by Apple's innovation and also by a variety of other effects is making the marketshare of smartphones as a percentage of all phones really take off right now.

    So if there's data to say that Apple's marketshare is already saturated, I'd be curious to know what it is.

    Gartner's quarter-to-quarter market share data shows the 3G's sales dropping by nearly 14% over the traditionally lucrative Xmas period. This isn't indicative of a product that has an increasing user base. Apple's main issue here is they have one product whereas the alternative OEMs have multiple products which, in some cases, use multiple operating systems.

    As a comparison RIM have done very well indeed because they have sufficient diversification across their product range - they have a touchscreen, full size QWERTY, reduced size QWERTY, etc. Nokia on the other hand have fared less well because they didn't release a convincing consumer class smartphone in 2008 - the N96 was too late and too similar to the N95 and the E71, whilst an excellent phone, is a business class unit and lacks consumer appeal. I expect them to do a lot better in 2009 with the 5800 and the N97.

    Which is where Apple's issue lies: Too little choice. The iPhone is a very good phone but it doesn't suit everybody and if you don't like the form factor or the overall package there isn't an Apple branded alternative. If sales had continued to climb then there might have been a suggestion that market share would continue to increase based on this single product strategy but that's not been the case.

    and Pre. Wow...it's getting crowded all the sudden! I also wouldn't discount MS. If Winmo 6.1 can get that kind of numbers, Winmo 7 might be able to generate interest. I don't think there is no such thing as a "has been" in this market as Palm has shown. But then again they STILL need to prove success in the market place, not just in the media.
