Apple Maps Gains 23 New Flyover Locations Around the World

Apple today updated its iOS feature availability page with 23 new Flyover locations around the world, including cities in the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

Flyover is an Apple Maps feature that provides photo-realistic 3D views of primarily large cities and landmarks. In satellite view, users can zoom, pan, and rotate to get a closer look at notable points of interest in supported regions.

The full list of new Flyover locations is available below, but some areas may only now be reflected on Apple's website:A Coruña, Spain

Apple added 20 new Flyover locations in 12 countries last month.

I wish Apple would have left the maps to Google. Flyover is cool, but Google Maps has so much of a lead on Apple Maps it's not even funny.

I thought they would consider fixing the massive coverage gaps in central London (e.g. west of Hyde Park) before the likes of Nottingham would be added.

I don't understand why it takes so long. Surely a couple of fly bys in a special plane are all that are required?

Maybe it's just the way I use maps, but the points of interest and the turn-by-turn directions are night and day differences.

And still no Flyover data for Frankfurt am Main, Germany! What the hell?
Frankfurt is the fifth largest city in Germany, it's the financial capital of Germany and also one of the big financial centers of Europe and the world...Frankfurt is also home to the European Central Bank! With all it's impressive skyscrapers (which is a unique feature in comparison to other German cities), it's even called "Mainhattan".
So what keeps Apple from including this city to Flyover? Instead they still include way smaller cities and towns... -.-'

Or probably it's where you live. Here in Northern Italy is the opposite, and Google satellite imagery is over 8 years old!

Because there are people who live outside London and the South East? Also, flying a plane around over major cities often requires clearance - not quite so simple.

Cost as well has to be considered, half the places in the UK I wouldn't want to waste money on.

Your point is a good one, and maybe the answer to why Apple ditched Google Maps.

Just now I realize the double meaning of "flyover states" (places not worth landing with an airplane) and "flyover cities" (places well worth hovering over with a helicopter). What an odd word, Flyover.

So what keeps Apple from including this city to Flyover?

The special something that makes people want to see a city from slant above.

Why? You can still use Googles maps, and with Apples competition, Google are pushed to improve even more. Its a win-win for consumers.

Personally I use Apple maps as they are more than adequate for my use and they work well with Siri.

Flyover usually starts to suck when you zoom into street level, but looks great when you're zooming around the tops of buildings. I'm wondering if Apple would ever combine Flyover with a street-level 3d scan from a car and then stitch them together in the 3d model. Having extra data at the street level would make it a worthy competitor to street view, even superior.

Turn-by-turn is just as good on Apple. Google maps does seem to have better POI, I will get them that. If you use an Apple Watch you can't beat the integration with Apple maps.

With the algorithms that Apple purchased from the "multi lens phone camera" company, there is no reason they couldn't do this. It would be a genius idea, I hope they figure it out.
