Apple today updated its Apple Pay website in Australia to note that Apple Pay now supports credit and debit cards from the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (aka ANZ).

The ANZ website has also been updated with a new Apple Pay webpage and a report from Reuters confirms the partnership. ANZ card holders in Australia are able to add their cards to Apple Pay, which has been confirmed by a MacRumors reader.

According to the ANZ website, many Visa and American Express cards are supported, including the ANZ Rewards Platinum Card, the ANZ Access Advantage with Visa Debit, and the ANZ Business Advantage wth Visa Debit, but MasterCard, ANZ Access, and ANZ Corporate cards are not supported.

Prior to today, Apple Pay was only available in Australia through a partnership with American Express, limiting it to American Express cardholders. Apple Pay has been slow to roll out in the country as rumors have suggested Apple has had trouble negotiating fees with banks. Apple Pay also has to compete with the New Payments Platform being pushed by the Reserve Bank of Australia, the country's central banking authority.

ANZ is one of the four major banks in Australia alongside Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Westpac (WBC), and National Australia Bank (NAB). According to Apple Pay vice president Jennifer Bailey, Apple is still in talks with the remaining three banks about further expansion of Apple Pay in the country.

Apple Pay is available in the United States, the UK, China, Australia, Canada, and Singapore, with Apple Pay support being limited to American Express users in the latter two countries. Apple Pay will soon be expanding to Hong Kong and Spain under the American Express partnership, and in the near future, Apple will be introducing Apple Pay support for additional banks and credit cards in Singapore.

During yesterday's Q2 2016 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple Pay is growing at a "tremendous rate" with transaction volume up 5X compared to a year ago. Apple Pay is gaining one million new users per week and is available at more than 10 million locations worldwide.

(Thanks, David!)

You guys are so lucky in Australia.

Pretty much every store accepts chip and contact-less payments.

Here in the United States, merchants drag their feet on everything, and Americans are afraid and resistant to anything but swiping the magnetic stripe on their card to pay.

C'mon Apple. Get it to Canadian banks too (MBNA/TD specifically).
This is good to hear though. If they can get through to Australian banks, hopefully they can do the same in Canada soon
This. Nobody uses American Express in Canada, making Apple Pay basically useless. All we need is Interac and it'll work everywhere.

Canadians should push for more American Express & Discover acceptance in Canada.

The customer service when it comes to disputes is better by itself. Visa & MasterCard basically have a duopoly in Australia and Canada, which isn't good for business.

There's no problem with that. It just simplifies things for everyone. Good people also should use credit as least as possible.

Our banks have grouped up, driving a hard bargain. Don't see it coming before September 2016 at least.

Don't some of the big Canadian banks (TD, maybe more) have US branches that do accept Apple Pay? Seems kinda ridiculous they would refuse the same terms for their Canadian side (unless Apple is trying to get away with more onerous terms in smaller countries, which I wouldn't put past them...)

I got Amex gold rewards through a promo recently. decided to keep it.
the points program is actually better than alot of the other programs and most stores i go to do accept amex.

there is a problem with that. competition promotes efficiency.
Also credit card is good when used responsibly.

For anyone who travels to Europe you couldn't pick 2 of the worst CCs in the market - Discover (the old Diner's Club card) - who accepts Discover.

Stick with MC and VISA - accepted worldwide wherever CCs are accepted.

Unless you're looking for superior customer service and the advantage of the card issuer having their own network. Also, who will keep Visa & MasterCard in check? Currently nobody in Canada.

Amen. Still I get the feeling it's not Apple... it's the Canadian banks and all of their nickle-and-diming, data hoarding, business-centric, xenophobia that's holding it back. They can't get it through their collective thick skulls that people don't WANT the home grown, nickle-and-diming, data hoarding, business-centric, xenophobic "solutions". They WANT Apple's offering. At least, a whole heck of a lot of them do.

In check for what?

It's a duopoly...

Why do you think America has four different card networks?

Why would the Canadian banks want to pay Apple for each transaction when Canada already has contactless cards and the infrastructure to go with it?

CC charges are capped in Canada by the Feds. Why would Canadian banks who have been in the forefront with Chip & Pin and contactless pay want to give any portion to Apple. If Apple didn't dig into the Canadian bank fees I'm sure they would be welcome.

Call Apple Customer Service and tell them to not charge their Apple Pay fees in Canada,

Your saying if you give someone something for free they will take it? :O

ITT: people who don't understand that credit simply isn't that big of a thing outside the US. (It only is for the most part because card security is bad enough such that there's a real chance of actually losing your money if you use a debit card as your primary card.)

Anyway, congrats to Australia!

They are compelled to provide Apple Pay in the USA due to competition. It is like Fido obligated to offer a $60/3 GB plan just because Koodo offers the same - as they have to operate in the same market. Also, they cannot group up against Apple in the USA because all the other banks have agreed to Apple's terms hence they will be in minority, whereas in Canada they can dictate their own terms.
