Following the launch of Personal Pickup in Australia and Canada earlier this week, Apple today expanded the in-store pickup service to the United Kingdom. Personal Pickup allows customers to place an order on the Apple Online Store or Apple Store app and pick it up at a nearby Apple Retail Store, generally within an hour.

Personal Pickup launched in the U.S. in 2011, but was unavailable elsewhere until this week. The service is offered for several Apple products, including Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and the Apple Watch. Apple notifies customers via email or text message when their order is available for in-store pickup with a valid photo ID.

MacRumors broke the news earlier this month that Apple was planning an international expansion of Personal Pickup in Australia, Canada, France and the United Kingdom, and the service is now live in three of those four countries. The service will likely launch in at least a few more countries in the near future.

Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts has been working to bridge the gap between Apple's online and retail store shopping experiences, and the international expansion of Personal Pickup fits within those plans. Apple has opened 463 retail stores in 17 countries since May 2001, with nearly 200 located outside the U.S.

Can't complain. I hate shopping in stores and not having to wait for delivery is always a plus.

Not much use for a BTO iMac though. That wouldn't be available for store pick up - well not within the hour certainly, that would indeed be good service. :). Even if this were possible it's not something I would like to lug around from the store. I'm not altogether sure what use it is TBH. If I'm having to go to the store to collect then I could buy when a get there in any event. In the past I have simply given the store a ring and they have placed it on one side for me.

That could involve ringing multiple stores to check if they have stock. With this service you enter a post code and you can immediately see which stores have stock available for collection. A significant improvement.

Excellent! Now we don't have to hear the usual broken record of "When is it coming to the UK?"....at least until the next Apple product release...

Actually they will deliver a BTO iMac to the store for pick up. It's also great way to see what is in stock instead of being placed on hold.

I think most of us would prefer something like a 27" iMac delivered to the home rather than the customer having to collect and then stagger to the car park with it - I know I certainly would. I suppose it depends where you live, though speaking personally I have never had an issue with out of stock products at any of the stores I have used. Perhaps I have simply been lucky.

If you have some distance to travel to your nearest store then I expect this could be useful. To be honest most (though not all) of my Apple products have been bought at John Lewis as I prefer the service along with their cheaper but just as good warranty.

Now, will we be told to stand "by the iMacs" to wait for a member of staff, ten minutes later told to stand "by the iPhones". Ten minutes pass so you call a member of staff over and it seems you were totally forgotten about. Why not have a till like any other retailer. They've even got rid of genius bars, not that you can ever seem to get an appointment anyway!

To be fair, John Lewis generally require next day to get the order to their store. In my experience, Currys click & collect/reserve & collect is a waste of time. They invariably don't have the item ready even several hours after ordering & have to ring their stockroom to bring something out from the back, which can sometimes take 20 minutes or so.

On that basis, this is a good additional option to have for picking up iPads, MacBooks, Apple TV etc for those who can't be at home for deliveries or can't get deliveries sent to their work. If you want home delivery of iMacs etc, that's still possible, this is just an additional option. I've seen plenty of iMac boxes carried out of stores though, so people do manage.
 
Question is if you buy online and pick up in store if anything goes wrong with it can you get it dealt with in store. The Online and Bricks stores have always been a bit separate when it comes to this. So I always buy in store.
