My 720p second generation Apple TV was also bricked after the update. It showed the "connect to iTunes" screen and the light was blinking fast. Luckily I had a micro USB cable at home, so I connected it to my iMac and updated the firmware. It looks to be working fine now. The first time this has happened to my Apple TV.

Mine failed during the update the day it was released. I started the update before I left the house, and when I returned the light on the front was flashing and the screen was blank. I pulled the power and plugged it back in and I got the connect your Apple TV to your computer with iTunes logo. So I did that and it was in Recovery mode and it did a restore. It was fine after that.

I happened to have a USB to Micro B cable, but I would imagine this would become a support nightmare for Apple and the average consumer that might not be very tech savvy that owns an Apple TV if this happens to them.

1. Most people I have spoken to really like iOS7. A genuinely positive response from what I hear/see.

I updated it for the new features and like the new features, but the icons and some of the stock apps are hideous. The super slim Helvetica font that some of the Android phones use on the lock screen also hurts my eyes. Count me as one of the non-positive responses. I'm getting an iOS 6 theme ASAP.

I got the crash and the flashing white light on my AppleTV but was able to restore it by connecting it to iTunes. I didn't even know I had two micro usb cords in my drawer, but I did. One didn't work, the other one did. It's updated and working great now. I had to also plug in my power cord after plugging in the micro usb cord for it to work.

Upon further inspection, my ATV2 seems fine but my ATV3 has subtitles on a lot of Netflix titles and I can't switch them off. The setting within the ATV3's settings is definitely off.

Bit of a fail, really :(

Seems like Cook et al. can't get ANYTHING right these days:

1 - Overwhelmingly NEGATIVE response to iOS7 and a pathetic version created for the iPad;

2 - Inventory debacle concerning the under-produced 5S versus the anemic demand for the 5C;

3 - pulled Apple TV update.

Time for Cook to go - bring back Markkula, Tevanian and Serlet, please.

1) Negative response? Maybe underwhelmed. I haven't heard of many specific problems since the release. I still hear people ranting about the old beta problems.

Too many people take beta releases as a problem with the OS when it hasn't been released yet (it's not done yet); this is people violating legal agreements to not reveal info end up putting a negative spin on a beta release which is supposed to be buggy. Apple doesn't release betas for testing or use for early adopters, it's so developers can start coding for the new iOS and test it on a device.

2) Anemic? Debacle? It was likely one was going to sell better than the other. I think they didn't start producing the 5s until later (wasn't ready yet) which is why they didn't take pre-orders, they didn't have them to ship. The 5c (pretty much a 5) was ready sooner, so they could ship sooner. They didn't take preorders for the 5s at the same time as the 5c and then delay shipments, they did exactly what they announced. FYI, the ship times / release times are by Apple (not the www or hopes), Apple released the 5s when the said, took orders when they said and items have started shipping already (my one order's tracking says it will get here 3 days before day 1 of estimate).

With them taking on-line orders the day of the actual release of the 5s, we knew a 10 days in advance they we going to be short on stock, this was common sense (not even factoring in the "rumors"). They should have just announced different release dates and been fine (by making more in advance).

3) Should they have left the AppleTV update out there to possibly cause problems? This is a good thing. Problems happen when you've got thousands and thousands of machines made at different times. Mine installed fine, FYI. Any software upgrade is always a possible issue.

Updated mine the day before yesterday with no issues. It's been working fine for the past 2 days (2nd generation).

I thought the same way for OS X 10.5 I wanted to revert to OS X to.4 asap, but I didn't, I gave the OS time to mature and eventually I ended up liking it. You have to give iOS7 more time.

Mine Bricked! :(

I attempted to update via Ethernet and the unit bricked. I had to get a USB cable, plug in to a workstation with iTunes and restore. After the restore I had to manually put back all of the settings. It was a very unpleasant experience.

Ok so there are problems - this makes me sad. First because the (2x) Apple TVs in my house are key to my audio & video experience, second because I have trusted these updates so far (from ATV 2 release onwards). However since I'm on holiday in a delightfully retro cottage in France I haven't yet updated - with luck it will all be sorted by the time I get home.
I would question the title of this thread - bricking is what Western Digital did with their WDTV (totally unrecoverable & an expensive paperweight) many here seem to be saying it is bricked because they don't have the right cable to fix it - I have a camera, a Kindle & some other unidentified device that all use the cable required and the cables are so cheap even a Yorkshireman like me has a spare in my travel bag.
My take on it - iOS7 is terrific on the iPhone, less so on the iPad. The new iTunes has iseriius ssues & the ATV update more serious issues. All of this is familiar for early releases & if we all weren't so darned impatient it would be less of a problem (admittedly I would have updated my ATVs but I use them as intended so expect it would have "just worked".
I don't think Tim Cook should go - I think it might have been worse with the sainted Steve.

Great. First the 10.8.5 update kills HDMI sound. Now the latest Apple TV update bricks your Apple TV. Wtf is going on in Cupertino these days?

iOS 7 seems to stable, for now.

I have a bricked ATV2 from the update. And it's "fully" bricked. Will not restore via iTunes. Headed to the Apple Store this afternoon.

My other ATV2 updated without issues and is working fine.

Just bought my Apple TV 2 days ago and updated to version 6. Constantly loses the wireless connection and keeps telling me to turn on Home Sharing when it is on.

A bricking error should have never got through alpha test, sheesh. Apparently, testing is a nonexistent concept at APPLE! :apple:

This makes me even sadder - some troll talking about testing like he understands the first thing about it - I would enlighten you but I really can't be bothered.

I don't have Apple TV, but in general it just seems like they've become way to sloppy releasing updates and features when they're not ready. Why not wait until you've done thorough testing and got it right rather than continually damage your reputation? With Jobs & Forstall gone, it seems as though no one over there at Apple have any balls. You've got your two top guys screwing each other in the ass. I'm not a hater, I've been a Mac user since the 90's. I just feel like something is missing in the chain of command at Apple

You have held down the select button on the remote while playing something with subtitles and made sure subtitles are definitely off in there?

My first one worked fine. My second one? Well, it's sitting here on my computer desk awaiting a $5 micro USB cable. I went on a whole rant on Facebook about why there is a micro USB port and ethernet port instead of a full-size USB port and the option to buy a wired adapter. Arrgh.

Mine works fine, however it did take an unusually long time to update. I thought for a while it may have froze and was bricked. I would say it was at least 30 min to update.

Mine is an Apple TV 2.
