Apple Releases iTunes 12.3.3 With Support for iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro

Alongside OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan, Apple has released an iTunes 12.3.3 update, introducing support for the iPhone SE and iPad Pro. Following the update, those who purchase a 9.7-inch iPad Pro or an iPhone SE will be able to sync their devices with their computers once they are available for purchase.

In a recent interview, Apple iTunes chief Eddy Cue promised Apple would introduce a new version of iTunes with an improved Apple Music interface, but new Apple Music features are not included in the release notes so it's likely that iTunes update will be coming at a later time.

Today's 12.3.3 iTunes update can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

One major key Apple Music inclusion that wasn't mentioned (not sure why not?) in the update notes is the "Add Songs to My Music when you add them to your playlists" that surfaced in the 9.3 betas. Now if you add a song from AM directly to a playlist with this option unchecked, it will not appear on your personal library. Great for those like myself who meticulously manage their personal libraries and don't want singles here and there from random playlists getting into the library.

Option is in Preferences > General, and in "Music" options on iOS 9.3 for those unaware.

That's actually a pretty big feature - for those it affects, at least; I wondered just yesterday why my "Recently Added" section included a few songs I'd not explicitly added to my music. This is why - playlists! And now we have an option for it :)

In my experience testing it did weird things and still showed songs in older iTunes on PC or Mac which were added to playlists on iOS using 9.3 betas and this feature - even if they were removed from playlist. I honestly think it just hides them with these new iTunes versions and they still linger around in your library hidden. Hopefully they fixed better but I got impression they they just hacked this on somehow.
 
They added "Show composer in all views" to the "Get Info" section. It works the same way the "Artist" field works in the Albums/Artists views. Good for those who have classical music in their libraries.
 
If they released this for compatability with new hardware, you may be wondering why they released it today given that the iphone se and 9.7" ipad pro are not yet available.

Actually they didn't make this clear but one new piece of hardware IS available today. The 256gb 12.9" ipad pro. I believe this is why they have released the new itunes today.

Guess Apple hasn't released this update for Windows machines yet... Still no "update" when I check for updates using the Apple Softwre Updater tool or within iTunes.

Showing in older versions was my experience too. This feature wasn't present even in the 10.11.4 dev/public betas, and only surfaced today, but upon installing the 10.11.4 GM today, all the songs I had added on 9.3 with the option unchecked disappeared (correctly) out of iTunes, while remaining in their respective playlists.

It appears to me that on the backend it's a metadata flag on iCloud Music Library which is why they were able to load it in this final version and have it work correctly immediately. Will an older version of iTunes show all the "hidden" Apple Music files - yes - but as long as you're up to date now 10.11.4/9.3 it seems to work smoothly.

What I understood from the interview Apple execs had with Gruber, it sounded like they said next major version as in iOS 10 and OS X 10.12, not these minor updates.

iOS 10 and OS X 10.12 is definitely their last chance to fix this, we should see in a few months.
 
Obviously they WILL be releasing a 32 bit version of iTunes for iOS 9.3 and iPhone 5SE and iPad Pro for Windows XP. Haven't found the link yet but I'm sure it's coming.

Hummm. I wonder why everyone is not upgrading to iOS 9? Dah!
 
I think, for a user who does NOT use Apple Music, this update is more like a simple regular update.
I want to try out Apple Music, but I fear it will mess up my carefully curated library.

Totally agree. This seems like an option that should have been available day 1. All of my 'playlist only' songs removed from My Music appropriately and stayed on their respective playlists but I can guarantee it's going to be a hit or miss situation for a lot of users.

Anyone know how to remove all the songs that I just want in a playlist and not in my library without removing them from the playlist?
