Apple today released the second public beta of macOS Sierra, the newest operating system designed for the Mac. Today's second public beta comes two weeks after the release of the first macOS Sierra public beta and just a few days after the launch of the third developer beta of macOS Sierra. The second public beta and the third developer beta offer the same features.

Beta testers who have signed up for Apple's beta testing program will receive the macOS Sierra beta through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store.

Those who want to be a part of Apple's beta testing program can sign up to participate through the beta testing website, which gives users access to both iOS and OS X betas.

macOS Sierra is a significant update that brings Siri to the Mac, allowing users to conduct voice searches to find files, look up information, and more. New Continuity features include an "Auto Unlock" option for unlocking a Mac with an Apple Watch, and a Universal Clipboard for copy paste that works across multiple devices.

Deeper iCloud integration makes files stored on the desktop or the Documents folder of a Mac available on all of a user's devices, and Photos features new deep learning algorithms for facial, object, and scene recognition. Messages includes rich links, bigger emoji, and "Tapback" response options, and the macOS Sierra update will bring Apple Pay to the web.

For full details on all of the new features included in macOS Sierra, make sure to check out our macOS Sierra roundup.

I think it's Desktop AND Documents folder - I don't see an option to just sync the Desktop, though I'd like that.

Can anyone confirm that the safari crashing has been fixed? I've also never been able to use a VPN w/Safair, Mail, messages, or outlook.

I've had no problem using AirVPN, but they have the advantage of a dedicated VPN app instead relying on the godawful Tunnelblick.

Is the on/off Switch for time machine in system preferences no longer a feature or is it a glitch with my beta?

That weird issue where you wouldn't see the text in an outlook Subject field on emails appears to be fixed, thank god. That was MADDENING.

UPDATE: Nope. It worked for one email. Ugh.

It keeps giving me an error during installation that says it cannot be verified. Not sure if it is just me or what to even do about that

I'd reconnect symbolic links and Dropbox.

As an asside, Siri seems to struggle with Documents if it's a symbolic link to another partition.

Does PB2 show up as a separate downloadable install or does it replace PB1?

I don't see it on the App Store but then again I'm trying to update on an unsupported MBP.

Public Beta 2 seems to be chewing up my memory. I have 16 GB, have only Safari, Mail, and Activity Monitor running, and have only 5 GB free. I've logged in and out and restarted to no avail.

I think it's gone. I just see a check box with "Backup Automatically".

Thanks....wanted to be sure. Has you noticed when checking for updates in the App Store that you get the beach-ball for a few seconds and at the same time the system is not responsive until update check is complete? It only lasts a few seconds but noticed this with both El Capitan an macOS Sierra....annoying.

They addressed my biggest gripe by adding in the option to return to iOS 9 and earlier style Touch ID functionality to unlock the device with a single touch of the home button. Having to touch it twice was a huge PITA!!!!!! For those wondering where to look it's under Settings - General - Accessability - Home Button - Rest Finger to Unlock.

Yes! Been sorely waiting for the second updates for macOS and iOS since I first got them. Really buggy and laggy (especially iOS) and hoping this resolves some things.

I do have a question for some: Do any websites utilize Apple Pay yet? Anything we can try now on Sierra?
