Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 10.1.1

Apple today seeded a minor version change to iOS 10.1.1, the current version of the iOS 10 operating system. The update is minor enough that it did not warrant a full 10.x.x number change, but it does include an updated build number.

iOS 10.1.1 being released today has a build number of 14B150, while the initial iOS 10.1.1 release, which came on October 31, had a build number of 14B100.

The new build of iOS 10.1.1 is only available as a download from Apple's servers and cannot be obtained over-the-air at this time for those who have already installed the first version of iOS 10.1.1. The new version of iOS 10.1.1 will likely be provided to those who have yet to install iOS 10.1.1, as it otherwise requires an iTunes connection to obtain.

There is no new information in the changelog for the updated build, so it is unclear what minor bug fixes or changes it brings.

The first version of iOS 10.1.1 fixed a bug that caused Health data to be unavailable for some users. A minor update, iOS 10.1.1 was released shortly after iOS 10.1, a more significant update that brought a new "Portrait" mode and dozens of bug fixes and feature improvements.

This most likely fixes the problem for users that do not have a screen lock passcode after updating to 10.1.1 being presented a requirement to enter their 4-digit screen lock passcode when they didn't have one set. This has hit two elderly people I know (one with iPhone 5 and one with 5c). It pretty much requires a DFU and a restore from iCloud/iTunes backup to get back running.

At least some information from Apple about it would be nice. No version bump yet the build number is higher by 50.

I'm gonna bet that they're just old and weren't reading the prompts.

Along with some other bugs I am sure but it didn't give details of those.

I don't think that's how build numbers work, but Icould be wrong.

That's not quite what the build number means--certainly there were more builds, but not necessarily that that many (or even close to that many) things within iOS were changed/fixed.

If it's different enough to give it a new build number, it's different enough to give it a new minor version number.

My guess is that it fixes a problem that only occurs when updating through iTunes. That is why it is not offered over OTA.

If that is the case then there is no difference to the actual OS (and so no updated version number required), only to the installation code.

iTunes doesn't do iOS delta updates. You always get the full ipsw file.

It indicates to me that they had a minimum of 50 code commits. But it's possible that some of those commits changed how another commit worked, or were simple updates to documentation or formatting or something.

Supposedly this fixes the loss of haptic feedback that's been occurring when people update OTA to iOS 10.x or iOS 10.x.x

Our automated build server at work will, if nothing is being committed, build multiple versions of the same software commits. This causes the build number to increment while the software stays unchanged. So the build number is not necessarily related to actual software changes.
