Another missing cursor

To be honest, thinking about not updating anymore because Mavericks is here in a few weeks anyway... (info that changed your life, I know.)

I have had this disappearing cursor in Snow Leopard for quite a while now. Often happens when running video or multiple applications. For me the FINDER outside window cursor works but inside Application Windows cursor disappears.

That's terrible. It hasn't happened to me (2008 Mac Pro with an external USB 2.0 drive), but I'll keep a lookout.

I have an external USB 3.0 RAID array that I'm using as JBOD. It's connected to the Mac Mini Server (Late 2012). 10.8.5 kept sleeping the external array, and it steadfastly would not wake up.

I had moved my home directories over to it, and have everything on the Mini (including the external drives) encrypted with FileVault 2.

You can imagine the joy it was to unfrak the system, but Time Machine pulled me through. I had to reformat the boot drive, restore from backup, move my user folders back over to the boot drive, then reset FileVault 2 on the boot drive.

Everything on the Mini now seems back to normal (10.8.4). Now that I've had my fingers burned I'll wait and see for awhile before upgrading again.

Now to clean up the Mac Pro...

When is Apple going to get around to addressing the long shutdown? Would be nice if this update took care of it.

Yeah... I agree. Please fix this, Apple!

One positive is with "Connect to Server...". Before this update, I couldn't immediately connect to a server using "Go > Connect to Server..." immediately after disconnecting from another AFP (or any other protocol) connection. Now, I can immediately connect with no problems. I didn't have this problem in Snow Leopard, and a certain version of a newer Apple OS never had this problem, either. So, I figured Apple would not fix this... just tell people to update to the latest version of OS X. I am glad Apple took care of this! :)

First impression, eats up more memory.

MacMini (2012)16 GB RAM would boot up with around 13.6 GB now comes in around 12.7 GB.

MBPr (2013) 8 GB RAM starts up on fresh boot at 5.5 GB when it used to boot up at 6.3 GB.

When I start using my MBPr I'm getting concerned because I'll quickly use up 75% of the memory or under 2 GB.

OpenGL extentions viewer now shows OpenCL platform as OpenCl 1.2 (FULL_PROFILE) in 10.8.5 so I tested it out with the gpu renderer in Blender 3d set to OpenCl instead of the CPU.

So to all the 3d blender artists who have an HD4000 gpu, my tests show over and over that render times are literally cut in half when you switch blender system settings to OpenCl.

I can no longer use time machine on my synology NAS.

I don't get how apple can bork these GM updates so badly. There are only a few systems to test on. Its not like its Windows or Linux and its impossible to test on every config.

Thanks for the info on standby. I do have Powernap enabled, however does this refer to Powernap while on battery because I think that may be off to help with battery life by default.

Thanks for confirming this.

----------

Do you by any chance tend to leave your machine in sleep mode while running off of battery power for at least more than a hour ? If so, you might be experiencing Apple's standby mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4392?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Slow Shutdown

Yeah... I agree. Please fix this, Apple!

I recently upgraded my hard drive to a Western Digital Black 750 GB/7200 RPM on my 2009 Macbook Pro and performed a "fresh, clean install" of Mountain Lion. Previously, I had been upgrading the OS starting with Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion, to Mountain Lion or using Time Machine to import all of the settings. This time round, I kept the OS install clean and did not import any of the previous settings from Time Machine. The only files I restored manually were my iTunes, iPhoto libraries and personal documents. The OS files were left intact, just as they were installed. I have to say that I have found a significant speed improvement in booting, starting applications and shutting down. My shutdown, even after updating to 10.8.5 completed in less than 5 seconds. I am not sure if it is the new hard drive or the clean install which improved my system performance. I believe it is a combination of both. :)

I don't get how apple can bork these GM updates so badly. There are only a few systems to test on. Its not like its Windows or Linux and its impossible to test on every config.

So this is probably a Synology issue, not being compatible with 10.8.5. Maybe it would have been wise to wait with updating for Synology to come with an update. I have a DS410 and always wait for 1-2 weeks after major releases for others to catch up with (e.g) Apple updates.

And for all others, maybe it is an idea to post your system specs with your complaint. Disappearing mouse cursors for instance are maybe related to a specific video driver. Now it looks like some have it and some don't, there's no "fault isolation". Be more specific. And report to Apple Feedback.

Kernel panics

Installed the update yesterday on my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (mid 2012). Everything went thru but after reboot and login, I got a kernel panic. Neither reboot nor reset of NVRAM did help. Booting in safe mode is possible. The initial crash report said that the last kext that was loaded was one related to my anti-virus-software. Well, I de-installed it (Avast) and installed another one (Avira). Did not change a thing.

This is the the most recent report I got:
Any ideas what went wrong? Help is much appreciated...

Installed the combo update on 2012 iMac. After a letting it go to sleep and coming back, it woke when I hit a key (Bluetooth keyboard and magic trackpad), but none of the gestures would work, nor key strokes, although MOVEMENT of the mouse pointer was fine (so it wasn't just a connection issue). Clicks wouldn't work. Then after about 10 seconds, all the commands came in at once as it caught up.

I hope this doesn't continue to happen.

Sufentafix - Have you got an Eltima USB adaptor?

It looks like the kernel panic posted by Sufentafix was caused by an out of date utility produced by Eltima for their USB to Ethernet adaptor

Why does it only happen in Photoshop then? Ridiculous to blame Apple for this.
Well i get the disappearing cursor several times a day...

But that is on my Win 7 machine at work. Especially with Adobe Reader X interestingly enough. And occasionally in Excel, where there must be a ghost cursor highlighting cells, but no visible sign of a little arrow...

I HAVE seen this on my MBP, but no more than a couple of times in the last few months.

Some issues 12F37

Sound:
Started during 12F33

Installed Combo 10.8.5 12F33. Tested no previous builds.
Macbook Air mid 2012.
I notice a "inside" hollow sound when playing.
Back to 10.8.4. Sound ok now.

Today i installed 10.8.5 12F37. Same hollow sound issue. It is really slightly different, but not nice.
Also strange light visible EYETV dvb-t video interlacing lag during picture movement horizontal.
New audio and video drivers?
Does some of you also notice a sound quality change? (hollow).

I have a problem where my external fw800 raid storage is going to sleep, then waking up again when data is required.

It didn't do this in 10.8.4 and my energy saver, put hard drives to sleep when not in use is unchecked.

This is my late 2009 27" i7 iMac.
