Apple today seeded the first version of an upcoming watchOS 2.2 update to developers, just over a month after releasing the first major update (watchOS 2.1) to watchOS 2, the operating system that runs on the Apple Watch.

The 2.2 beta can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on an iPhone running the iOS 9.3 beta by going to General --> Software update. To install the update, the Apple Watch must have 50 percent battery, it must be placed on the Apple Watch charger, and it must be in range of the iPhone.

It is not yet clear what is included in watchOS 2.2, but it's likely to include bug fixes and performance improvements for issues discovered since the release of watchOS 2.1. It may also include new features to enhance the performance of the Apple Watch.

The first major update to watchOS 2, watchOS 2.1, included a range of bug fixes to address problems with Calendar, Power Reserve mode, third-party apps, and more. It also included support for several new languages.

    What's new in watchOS 2.2:

Apple Watch - With watchOS 2.2 and iOS 9.3, the iPhone is able to pair with more than one Apple Watch. Both updates are required, with each watch running watchOS 2.2 and the iPhone running iOS 9.3.

Apparently watchOS 2.2 and iOS 9.3 allow you to pair to multiple watches in the Watch app

From the release notes, in iOS 9.3 the apple watch app can pair multiple apple watches at one time (all watches must be running watchOS 2.2)

I guess that's a "no" on receiving more watch faces in-between major OS updates. Well, I hope this will at least speed up my watch a little.

I guessed this was coming with a new watch on the way. This tells me I will look at the stainless watch next go around with a metal band and keep my sport watch for running and cycling activities. It does well enough with those things that I can have two watches. No big return to be had on a version 1 watch anyhow once the new version arrives.

My wife will be very happy about this. She currently has 2. She has many other watches that she does not use much anymore. She wear's them partly as an accessory. Her older watches were in the $200 price range. We got her second watch at target around xmas for $250 ($100 off sport watch at Target). I could see her picking up one about once per year.

I only have the 1 watch, but I'm sure this will make plenty of people happy.

maybe the second watch for pairing isn't a watch, but a sports band that you can wear when you workout. Nike pulled out of the sports band market back in '14 and could potentially be working on a project with Apple. Shot in the dark, but I hate when I don't get workout credit when I can't wear my watch to play basketball or any other contact sport. This would complete the circle(s) so to speak. Also would prob knock Under Armor on its ass with their new "Healthbox" campaign.

Yup. Been predicting this since the beginning. The Hermes edition more or less confirmed this would happen.

    Great news!

Custom watch background for each different watch face would be an easy addition. Apple building for tomorrow, starting to forget today.

My question is why would someone truly have the need to pair more than 1 watch to an iphone? How many people really have more than 1 Apple Watch?

Not today, tomorrow. Post Watch 2 I plan to keep my current watch 1. Its early but still welcome.

What I've been hoping. I use my sport's watch everywhere - but it does need to be charged particularly after long workouts. I almost bought a second at Target during their $100 off sales - but decided not to because (1) Apple would probably release an attractive update options for the Watch in March - although may be not, but regardless - having two would allow me to have it with me all the time and really complete all the circles. I've been managing to, but the "stand" goal is tricky somedays in between chargers and I do like the perfect week award when you make all three goals.

Hopefully, this beta finally fixes app icon breaking when the app is updated (which was supposed to be fixed on 2.1).

Even though I only have one watch, I'm kind of pleased by the option. May give a second thought now to buying the Space Black stainless steel model at some point to go along with my silver stainless.

Nice! I'm guessing Apple wants to promote purchasing both the Sport and Stainless Steel watch. This makes sense to me.

This is terrible news, so far this is exactly the reason why I didn't get the gold Sport Apple Watch.... Now I can't use this as an excuse anymore.

Still think I will wait until the 2nd version of the Apple watch before getting a new one.
