The Metropolitan Museum of Art has shared details on its annual 2017 Gala and Costume Institute exhibition, where Apple will be a sponsor for the second year running.

The 2017 event, which will take place on May 1, will have a focus on fashion designer Comme des Garçons's Rei Kawakubo, who will also co-chair the event, alongside Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Proceeds from the event go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute.

Last year's fashion/tech themed event was co-chaired by Apple design chief Jony Ive, alongside Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, and others. The intersection of technology and fashion was a fitting choice for Apple's co-sponsoring the 2016 event, as the company came out with its first fashion item, the Apple Watch, in 2015.

Apple's continuing support for the gig outlines its deepening ties with the fashion industry, with the company's timepieces turning up on the wrists of celebrities and in glitzy magazines, Apple stores taking a page out of Burberry's fashion playbook thanks to Apple retail head Angela Ahrendts, and even audio accessories like Beats headphones becoming fashion statements.

I don't get the goal here. Apple's biggest fashion item is the Apple Watch, which makes up a small portion of the company and will likely continue to stay small. I'd imagine that many in the fashion world with any influence wouldn't wear an Apple watch for anything more than to see what it is and would instead focus on actual watches with horological value and much higher price tags.

Do fashion designers use computers? Phones? How about journalists? Photographers?

NewsFlash! Times change. Apple STILL makes great computers. And they dabble in many other industries too. Not a big deal...

Do I really need to say more? In the past year they've sponsored more Fashion Galas than they've released new Macs.

The Mac Pro hasn't been updated in 1040 days!

I would be fine if Apple dabbled in many industries. They have, unfortunately, proved themselves incapable of doing more than one or two things at a time, however, and their obsession with music and fashion is really hurting them in the Mac department.

Is he wearing a shower curtain, and a basket on his head?
Did you mean "he" or is it a "she"? If I had to guess, I'd say the latter. If you follow the link to Vogue, the designer is interested in "extreme beauty". Hmmmm. Beauty in fashion MUST be in the eye of the beholder.

Well then Goodyear should sponsor as well since most people there probably drive too! Seriously though, do those fashhion designers watch tv, read magazines, see billboards? They already know the products. Apple isn't some extremely watered down company like Samsung that has 40 different phone, 70 TV's, 50 computers, and numerous household appliances. Apple sticks to the basics and it is why they have been successful. They have their main 8-10 products and they advertise them well. You would have a tough time finding someone that didn't know Apple made a watch or phone.

There is a difference between PR, marketing and advertising.

It is one thing knowing a company produces a product and another being convinced you want/need to buy it.

Why do you think the Mac Pro hasn't been updated in so long? Because they don't sell as many as those computers as they do MacBook Pros/Airs.

I agree that is a long time, but are the current Mac Pros lacking something that you or someone else would want? Or do you just want a new one to come out just because it's been roughly 3 years?

Mac Pros NEVER were updated on a yearly basis. Maybe over a decade ago, but the Mac Pro and Mac Mini are not big sellers for Apple.

Apple may focus on other industries now, but their current Mac lineup is great for MOST people. They're still solid computers even if it's been a year or so since some have been updated.

Hey Jony, how about getting a model to wear a mac pro on her head with some tropical fruit inside à la Carmen Miranda? Now you don't want that fabulous accessory to go about with outdated internals do you? So put a better chip inside, and some better graphics too, the faster the more fabulous...

I miss the days when Apple wasn't trying to be a fashion company, and just made good computers.

Where have you been? Apple since SJs return has been part of fashion from the clamshell notebook to the iPod to the iMac to the Apple Watch. You think SJ wanted Apple to sell products in various colors because it made the products perform better? Apple products has been a tech fashion accessory for a long time.

The audience looks delighted to be there too

You don't know anything about the fashion world do you? No one smiles at these things.

Except for that one woman on the bottom left, in gray, who has an epiphany, and now she's wondering "I've spent all that money on fashion design school for this!?!"

LOL! comment of the day right there.
