I'm concidering driving to the apple store to get my new comp instead of ordering. One thing is though if I order online there is a discount I get for being a federal employee would I still be able to get it in store? I asume so but I know some places do things like that online only. After reading alot of messages here I want to be sure I get the latest revision but not sure how to ensure that I do any advice on that one?

    Thanks for any help

I would say that most likely you'll still get the discount in the Store. If you want to be absolutely sure just give them a call and they'll be able to tell you.

If you get a computer at the store, I'm not sure if you can get BTO options, can you? I think you have to go with stock. That would be my only concern about buying from the store. You can definitely get a discount at the store as long as you bring ID to prove you are eligible. Anyhow, don't quote me on it, but I remember once hearing you can only get stock machines at Apple Stores. Can anyone confirm?

you can't get BTO, but in the bigger stores, i have seen them have 2 levels of hardware. In an apple store, for a 2GHz MBP for example, they may have stock, and top of the line 2.16. Or maybe for the iMac they will have 2GHz stock, and 2GHz bigger hdd, graphics, RAM, etc. But you do not know what they are selling besides stock.

Unfortunately, that isn't at all stores at all times.

I would call the local store first if driving there is any major trek.

I generally just call 1800MYAPPLE and order that way, then wire the funds.

Yes waiting for shipment will make you crazy for a week or two, but
    you'll get the latest revision.

The larger stores do carry some upgraded models, but I'm not sure at all how they handle government discounts.

So if I order from 1800MYAPPLE I'm sure to get the latest revision? Does that go for ordering in the online store as well?

Yes, when you order online directly from Apple, you will be able to select the latest version of whichever computer you are looking at.

Regarding your question of the discount, I have received the educational discount in the store by showing ID, so I assume you could do the same with the federal government discount. Of note, in the store, you can only buy hardware with the discount, NOT software. However, you can buy software online with the discount (not clear why there's a difference).

    Good luck!

First I want to say thanks to everyone here for being so helpful.
I went through the entire online check out process except submitting payment and it never gave my the option to select different versions it just tells me I'm getting this one MA464LL/A is this the latest one? On another note I think I'm happy with how it comes setup standard the only upgrad I was considering is mybye getting the faster HD.

I think by "latest version", the intent was "most recent minor hardware revisions". Apple will often silently make minor fixes - almost always invisible to the end user - to address issues (power supplies, etc.). The brick-and-mortar Apple Stores carry the same models as the online store, but the ones sold by the online store are often manufactured most recently and incorporate the latest changes (if any). However, most of the time, there is little or no difference between an ordered Mac and one bought locally.

Well I went ahead and ordered online now all I have to do is wait, I'm pretty excited and can't wait to get it. I probably should have saved the money but ohwell what good is working so hard for it if I don't enjoy it.

Thanks again to all you gave advice
