any idea if apple asks for verification on your student status when ordering a product with an educational discount online? i'm not talking about ADC- just the standard educational discount. my student status will expire in the new year, just when i will be able to buy, so just wondering if i should attempt it anyway, or go with through a friend who will still be a student.

if anyone knows about this- i'd appreciate your sharing your experience!

Apple randomly checks for verification of student status...you may or may not get audited.

Note that you can only buy one desktop and one laptop per academic year as a student, so if your friend buys one for you, he'll use up his quota of that type of machine.

I have bought 2 machines with an educational discount and they did not check either time. I would assume that they do check sometimes, though.

This has to be the first time this question has ever been asked.

Bottom Line = When you will be buying this machine, you will no longer be a student so you shouldn't even attempt it.

It's people like you who will spoil it for everyone else when Apple tightens their policy on Edu discount.

thanks for all the advice guys- i will play it safe and buy through my friend...and i don't have to worry about the quota as she doesn't buy mac (though maybe she'll be convinced after she sees mine!)

I think that is a good idea; as someone said before, it isn't fair to buy using the student discount if you are no logner a student... but if you have a friend/sibling/partner who is and is willing to let you buy one in their name, then I see no harm done.

The education from Apple is great, although the best discount is on Apple Care and not the hardware. Any discounted is appreciated though.

Where you make a killing though is on some of the application software you can run on the computer. Adobe and Maya come to mind. I think that the total savings from the Adobe suite and Maya comes to over $5,000. I'm sure they make the money back eventually because I use those products exclusively and they get a free endorsement every time someone asks me what I used to complete my project.
