I am thinking about buying a Mac Mini Core Duo for now until i can raise enough money for a MBP, and I was wondering if the $150 for Apple care is really worth it. I'd have this thing for less than a year, and would sell it prior to my MBP purchase. I'd also be keeping my PC. Are there serious known issues with the mini like there is with the MBP, or are they generally safe to have un-warrantied?

AppleCare is actually only for the second and third years, and can be purchased anytime during the first year. If you're keeping it less than a year, no need to buy AppleCare! It'll enhance resale value, and it does provide free phone support after the 90 days provided free, but it's unlikely to be needed by you in the first year of ownership - again, only if you really want the phone support for things not covered by hardware problems.

I think that you should skip the purchasing of AppleCare and instead put that extra $150 towards the cost of a MacBook Pro. :)

And no, I have not heard of any issues related to the intel based Mac Minis.

Applecare is not really worth it IMHO, $150 for a $800 computer? Come on Apple!

In my experience desktop computers tend to either break within the first few weeks (when its still covered by standard warrantee) or after many years, so I never bother with extended warrantees.

Laptops are a different matter however.

My thought as well. $150 for a $800 computer is just not worth it in my opinion. :)

then that would mean 350 for a 1600 laptop (in my case) isn't worth it either then? since it is an even higher percentage.

Personally i think applecare is worth it no matter what just as a piece of mind, just in case something happens.

See my original comment above where I said: "Laptops are a different matter".

it's different with a laptop. Laptops break a lot more often. I've never had a mac desktop that had an issue.

So no, don't get $150 applecare for an $800 desktop that you'll have for less than a year. :)

For a laptop, I would urge buying AppleCare. :)

    That too. :)
