Couple questions... First, Do I have to purchase applecare at the time of purchase? If no, how long after the purchase are you still eligible?

Second... Why did/didn't you chose to purchase applecare with your macbooks?

No...you have one year in which to purchase and activate AppleCare.

Most people around here highly recommend AppleCare for laptops...just one decent repair will make your money back.

You can buy it anytime within the first year.

I recommend it for laptops because it's basically less than the cost of one repair, and it gains you two years of warranty.

Edit... there's an echo in here.
