I got a scanner I ordered from Apple.com today, Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 (any opinions about it are welcome) well they shipped it in it's regular box, no FedEx box, they just slapped a tracking number sticker on it, I live in an apartment building, so the guy in my lobby who signed for the package was excited and kept talking to me about computers and how his brother has a scanner that can do this and that, I also ordered an iMac which is supposed to come this week, is it gonna come in a FedEx box or will it be the same? I don't like people knowing what I get shipped to me, security reasons I guess.

    thanks

I got my Intel iMac from Amazon and it was in a brown box with no clue what it was on the outside. I thought that the Macs came in a brown box as well. The scanner didn't since it wasn't Apples per say but I've gotten some things the same way from other vendors (not cool if I may say so  )

i'm in the UK, and TNT delivered my powerbook in a brown box. however (and here's the twist) my HP printer was NOT in a brown box, it was the original product packaging.

My iMac G5 (bought from the Apple refurb store) arrived in the original box with no external brown box. Ditto for my Altec Lansing iM7. Slightly smaller items such as Apple wireless keyboard, mouse, EyeTV etc have all been delivered in brown boxes.

Apple needs to know the point of the brown packaging isn't only to protect the stuff in it, it's also to keep a level of privacy, if every package I got was in it's original packaging, everybody in my building would know I have a Sony HDTV, a Bose sound system, a Maxtor hard drive, Ipod nano and mini, etc. which would make me an attractive target for home burglary, I really hope my iMac comes in a brown packaging

All of my Macs have come with the brown box on the outside and the regular Apple box on the inside. But on the side of the box there is a huge sticker saying PowerMac G5 with all the specs and serial number, but the shipping company never requirers a signature. The really odd thing is they require a signature for iLife....

Macs from Apple usually come in a brown box with a return address to ACI.
This is done for privacy so no one will know what is in the box and who it is from.

PowerBook came in brown box. PowerMac didn't, but that was bought at a store so no brown box needed. I certainly hope that Apple doesn't make this a new trend. It's certainly not an attractive one.

i hate the way that in the regent street apple store, they sellotape a sales bag to the side of a product box if it's too large to fit in a bag, e.g.the iMac, powermac or cinema displays. i bet it's painful to remove:(

for my fairly recent ibook, it was just the ibook packaging with a thin cardboard box perfectly around it. fairly effecient, as the ibook's packaging is fairly sufficent.

When I got my ibook it came in a big box with lots of bubble wrap inside it, on top of that the ibooks box was in a smaller brown box.
    Big Box >Bubble Wrap> Small Box>Ibook box.

Where do you live again? ;)
I know most of the Macs that get shipped to the store have that extra brown box over them. I wonder why a company that ships printers, cameras, scanners and whatnot doesn't do the same thing with it's goods. Really, if it's not broken that leaves theft as the most possible loss to happen to an item.

My PB came in a nice brown box that fit perfectly over the beautifully designed box. Although I agree with the OP that it is nice to perserve a level of privacy, I can see why Apple might have protective brown boxes for the products that they make, but not ones that perfectly fit the 3rd party products they sell - that would be a lot of expense on their part, and a lot more different box sizes they would need to stock. You'd think they could cover them with a opaque shrink-wrap or something, at the very least.

My 20" intel mac came in a brown box as well with a white apple box that fit just perfect inside. I like the idea of shipping in a brown box so the apple box is not damaged. I honestly don't mind a imac or apple on the side of the box. I like having the main packing box clean and new for future moves :) then I have a nice secure box with no holes in it to move my computers safely.

I also kept my lcd tv, dvd player, xbox boxes for future moves as I have land in north carolina I'll be moving there soon.

Ordered an iMac in January '05 - Made some upgrades and it shipped from China in its standard Apple box.

Ordered an iMac in December '05 - Stock model and it shipped from California in a plain brown box (with the standard Apple box inside the plain brown box).

Not sure if whether you order a stock model or not plays a role in how it ships...

My Power Mac G5 came in the Apple box with pictures plastered all over- no doubt could exist as to what I was getting. :)

My iBook G4 came in a standard brown box.

My refurb mini came in a brown box with an Apple logo on it. Inside the box were the computer and components packaged in grey shipping foam.
