For the last few weeks I have been getting a warning "You are opening an application for the first time...do you want to open?" every time I open a Microsoft office app for the first time each day. It is irritating. Can I do something to stop this? I have tried a couple of things such as deleting

/library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140501 csstore

or running

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -all local,system,user

in Terminal (both suggested before) but to no avail

These apps were installed when I bought the iMac some years ago and have worked perfectly. As I said, the warning notices have only started recently. Here is the output you requested. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. A first step is to get the Microsoft Office 2008 folder and its contents owned by root. They are currently owned by user 502, which is not root and not harrybaker.

Please paste the following into Terminal:

Code:
sudo chown -R root /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2008/

You will need to supply your admin password when it is requested. To see if the ownership was correctly changed, you can paste

Code:
cd /Applications; ls -l

into Terminal. If you see

Code:
drwxrwxr-x@ 14 root admin 476 12 Aug 2008 Microsoft Office 2008

in the output, then the application is now correctly owned by root.

Whether or not this by itself solves your problem remains to be seen. You'll have to give it a try.

I've done that and it's now owned by root. I'll switch off the computer, reboot and see if anything has changed

I've rebooted and it seems that the problem is fixed. I'm puzzled as to why it changed a few weeks ago but perhaps it won't happen again. Many thanks.

You're welcome. Glad the problem is fixed. Fingers crossed :)

Not sure why the problem manifested itself just recently.

Part of the problem is that second Terminal command in your first post. That is to rebuild the launch services database. On my machine at least, running that command causes many apps to think they are being run for the first time and I get that prompt you are seeing.

I suspect now that you have fixed the underlying issue, as long as you don't run the launch services rebuild command again you will not see the prompt.

Same thing happened to me, just only now it came up this warning when I tried to open Words, I searched google & found this thread. I entered the commands in terminal it shows:

205:/Applications Macbook$ ls -@l /Applications/Microsoft*
ls: illegal option -- @
usage: ls [-ABCFGHLPRSTWZabcdefghiklmnopqrstuwx1] [file ...]
205:/Applications Macbook$ ls -@l /Applications/Microsoft*

Welcome to Darwin!

What does the illegal option means?

I only serviced it once before many years ago and I supposed the servicer had reintalled some apps at that time.
I used to open documents in my microsoft Words there were no warning before, why it suddenly warns me? I'm not sure should I ignore it and proceed to open or not? Can someone please explain to me and what should I do?
