applications and programs for ATV

hello all ive been reading through the forum n found out that many of u people download programs and applications that enhance some features of the ATV...like for example about the USB port on the ATV, can we use it?! n if so will ATV read any format or only those of itunes, and can i use vidoes not from itunes on ATV?!
