In work we have all the main applications we use most (quark, photoshop etc) up on the top menu bar under the apple drop down. Does anyone know how to do this with selected applications? I'm having trouble searching for the right terms in google. I'm using osx 10.4.7

At work do you use OS 9?
So when you click the 'Apple' from the menu bar a list of applications show up?

I think this is what the questions means....lol sorry for not understanding.

aye, when you click the apple top left of the screen you get a list of maybe 7-8 programs which we use most often, it's just a shortcut to save having to go into the HD and applications, It's only a few of the most used programs. I think some of them use osx with that dock thing set to magnifaction and some use the older operating system whatever its called (without that dock); both have the same few programs up their as shortcuts. i'm fairly new to macs so it's all abit new to me.

the only other thing I can't seem to figure out is how to get the applications folder onto the dock? I can drag it onto the bottom part of the dock where it stays until you reboot but it won't let you drag it onto the top part of the dock (I have it set to vertical). I just read on here that you can hold the mouse on it for a few seconds and it shows a list of programs in that folder liek the start menu on windows. That'll be useful as well as the shortcuts on the apple menu. I don't like to have many things on my dock, just mail and safari.

nah on our systems its omewhere around system preferences as a shortcut, it's not a list of most recent items. it's just like what you get in window when you drag a program onto that first part that opens up when you click on start.

Dragging the Apps folder onto the dock is quite useful but it has to go on the right-hand side or bottom of the dock depending on how your dock is positioned... but we're talking OSX here, multi-tasking and all. My home and work machines are set with a core of about 10 apps or so to launch on start-up.

It's rare that need to actually find an app to launch it... what is more useful is to have those core apps in the dock so that you can drag files onto them i.e. eps or pdf files onto Photoshop or Illustrator etc.

yeh like that markkk, how do you do that? it's not exactly the same (it's just a few most commonlly used programs not the whole application folder) but that would do the job.

    command + shift + 3

i took a picture of the WHOLE screen and then took a picture of the picture of the desktop. so it isnt a WHOLE screen. (i keep the mouse on the menu and press the key combination) for a selection, you press the same thing but 4 instead of 3. also, here is a handy widget for taking screenshots

    http://www.vanillasoap.com/widgets/

it is the second one tehre (called capture)

:( not sure if my command+shift+3/4 combo is disabled or something, when I first got the mac I read it on the keyboard shortcuts section on here, it worked a few times then for some strange reason it stopped working, abit weird that, I must have done something to the settings.

Hrm, you gave me the name but no download link or URL to a site where it would be. :/

Searched for it on http://www.interfacelift.com but it doesn't look like yours.
