Apple recently updated its policy on audiobooks, allowing customers who have purchased audiobooks directly from Apple to re-download them using iTunes in the Cloud through iBooks on iOS devices or through iTunes on a Mac or PC. Audiobooks are now listed in a customer's iBooks purchase history and can be re-downloaded just like standard e-books.

According to a support document on downloading past purchases, the change was made on March 3. Prior to that date, audiobooks could not be re-downloaded through iCloud and were only available if they were included in a backup made on a Mac or PC.

A second support document outlining which iTunes purchases can be downloaded again by country has also been updated to reflect the change. In 22 countries, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and much of Europe, purchased audiobooks can be accessed at any time through a user's Purchased history.

In iOS 9.3, audiobooks are also available to be automatically downloaded to all iOS devices when purchased. In the Settings app under iTunes & App Store, "Books & Audiobooks" is now an option under Automatic Downloads. Previously, this section listed only books, leaving out audiobooks.

iOS 9.3 will also streamline the iBooks "Purchased" tab with deeper organizational options that sort books by category and it enables Family Sharing for audiobooks.

Apple has been gradually improving support for its selection of audiobooks. In iOS 8.4, audiobooks became available to purchase and listen to through the iBooks app, making them much more accessible. Prior to that date, audiobooks had to be purchased through the iTunes store and listened to using the Music app.

Audiobooks can be re-downloaded on all iOS devices immediately. Automatic Downloads of audiobooks will be enabled with iOS 9.3, set to be released to the public in the near future.

(Thanks, William!)

This is great news. I have called to have my audiobooks re-granted on my purchase history a couple times, and the iTunes reps were happy to help, but I know there's a limit on how many times that could be done, and I was always losing access to my audiobooks. Can confirm this is working, at least in the 9.3 beta.

Oh man, and I finally forced myself to read because I just couldn't stand managing my audiobooks on iTunes like a caveman.;)

About bloody time. Now I don't have to solely purchase from Audible who's allowed redownloads for the longest of time.
Now if Apple could implement the credit by month, I'd happily move away from Audible :)

THHAAAAANKKKKK YYOOOOUUUU

Although, it wasn't a big deal to email their CS and they reset the download, still. This is great!!

Yes!!! now I can finally throw the laptop out the window and live just with my iPad pro. No need to sync with iTunes ever again, i LOVE it!!

Well at least sell the laptop or something. Geez, don't have to throw it. Maybe put it down softly on your desk for now.

In all seriousness iPad pro is enough for you? Do you miss the keyboard or do you use the apple one? What do you do with it/for a living?

Just wondering...

Any info on if it is just new purchases? I bought Hitchhiker's Guide in 2011 and have since lost it, and sure would like to have it back....

I keep saying that there will be a day where the ipad pro is all that is needed to replace the macs (desktop or laptop). You sir are ahead of your time. I had called it for 2 years out (2018-2020).

I think for a majority of people yes. For content creators, probably not. I don't see myself using xcode on an ipad pro anytime soon. Would be REALLY awesome, but not happening yet.

About the iPad pro, yes it really works for me, works very well. I am surprised how fast I could find solutions/alternatives for my old workflow to use it for everything. The gamechanger was getting the keyboard/cover thing from Apple. It's a really nice keyboard and it took that last bit of "i still need a laptop" away. Now I use it both for work and at home.

At work I use it with Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Workflow, Dropbox, Graphic(old iDraw), Scanbot mostly but also a few of the Adobe apps. I make salespresentations, customer offers, take orders, designing products, planning production, editing photos, making marketing folders, etc. The best thing is that now "work" is actually a lot more fun than it used to be :)

When I get home I just disconnect the keyboard/cover and jump up in the sofa and use it for HBO, games, surfing the web, etc. Works great!

Well, since they took away the audiobook features in iOS 6 when they made iOS 7 and I was dumb enough to upgrade I have now learned my lesson and buys my books from other sources. I bet Apple will change everything again soon. I sometimes feel like I have let Apple fool me enough times already.

Now I just wish they'd move audiobooks to iBooks on the Mac. Once they moved them to iBooks on iOS, I didn't realize that the change wasn't made on the Mac as well, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that they'd stayed in iTunes and that my Mac's iBooks didn't have a bug

I agree, there will always be a need for a laptop, desktop, server, mainframe, HAL9000, etc. It will all be based on use case. But for the masses - those that primarily surf the web, watch videos, play some light games, check emails, store and do some light editing of pictures and videos - the ipad pro is a great device to replace the bigger machines. Once are in a work scenario where you need to do more serious editing of pictures and videos or where you have more CPU/GPU intensive applications, then you will certainly need something more powerful. In my experience, about 70% of users at home fall into the world of the masses. I fall into that world at home. As a project manager among other things, I still need MS-Project and Visio in addition to the other MS suite to do my work. for that I need a laptop. When there are reasonable alternatives to that I would be ready to switch. At home today, 99% of the time I am on my phone or ipad. the mac sits there very quietly (i do use it to run my music throughout the house, even if I control it from my phone).

Moving audiobooks into iBooks is the most idiotic move Apple ever made. Someone without brains made the distinction between "stuff with tunes" and "stuff without tunes" and put eBooks and audiobooks into the second category. To me the categories are "stuff I can use while driving" and "stuff that I have to look at". Music and audiobooks = "stuff I can use while driving", eBooks and video = "Stuff that I have to look at".
