    No really...

last month, Sheik Hilali said: "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?

"The uncovered meat is the problem."

The sheik then said: "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

He said women were "weapons" used by "Satan" to control men.

These muftis, they certainly have an eye for a soundbite.

Unbelievable. How are Muslims supposed to work past their current stigma when Muftis make claims like this.

Yes, what is really interesting is that you will be aware that there are many in the Muslim community who have spoken out against Hilal, but no one spoke out against him *until* the transcript of his sermon was published by the Australian.

So we have this guy, the number one Muslim cleric in Australia and he is regularly preaching to large numbers of Muslims who do not appear very concerned about him *until* the non arabic speaking population is alerted to what he is actually saying. Then, and only then do the so called moderates speak out.

His statement also has a corollary that hasn't been widely reported in the news, that men are feral cats.

So, in one fell swoop he's:

    1. Labelled women "uncovered meat."
    2. Labelled men feral "cats."

So he's basically removed one foot from his mouth and replaced it with another.

Don't see him lasting much longer though.

I read about this the other day. People like that just make me sick.

I'm all for tolerance and acceptance but this guy needs to be removed from the country.

Sorry but the "taken out of context" excuse is weak and pathetic. No matter what the context his comments were wrong and hateful.

Wow this is cool seeing all the Aussies on one page. :) I know I've said this before, but there are probably a lot a beautiful Muslim women out there that we can't see because of their veils. Every once in awhile I'll catch a cute girl on the news from Lebanon where they're not so fanatical. :)

No, it's a fair point. Certain sections of the media were reporting that his comments referred to sexual assault, whereas he claims that they referred to infidelity.

I'm not excusing his comments and nor do I agree with them, but nonetheless, this is an important distinction.

The thing is that it would appear that many muslim men agree with him as it suits them. The veil is *control*. Let's see what the final outcome is, there does not appear to be much groundswell from the Islamic community to oust him, and how are non muslim Australians to react to this?

Except that if you read the speech he did not make these distinctions at all, it is clear what he was referring to. He also said his sermon was only meant for the few 'old men' in the congregation. He changes his story daily.

Do you have a link to an unabridged transcript of his sermon?

    The mufti — unplugged

EDIT: the above speech is really boring, the salient bit it near the end. He is clearly talking about rape when he makes the cat/meat analogy. You can spin till you reach the centre of the earth but it doesn't change it.

    from the bbc link...

But Mr Zreika said the LMA had yet to fully review the contents of the sermon and Sheik Hilali should be offered the benefit of the doubt until any offence had been proved.

    BUT...

After a four-hour meeting on Thursday night, Sydney's Lebanese Muslim Association voted not to take tough action against him, concluding that his comments had been misinterpreted.

It was an astonishing decision and one that flew in the face of calls by other Muslim groups, including the Islamic Council of Victoria, for the Mufti to be sacked.

By early yesterday the LMA's resolve had already begun to crumble as it found itself roundly condemned. It has agreed to review the decision.

But things became more complicated for Mr Zreika - a solicitor from Auburn in Sydney's west - when he heard a recording of the contentious sermon played to him by LMA staff. The Weekend Australian believes that Mr Zreika, who has only been running the organisation since July 1, was dumbfounded.

Sheik Hilali's words in the contentious Ramadan speech were clear and no spin doctor - not even Sheik Hilali's on-again-off-again spokesman Keysar Trad - could save the cleric from the drama that was charging his way.

Hilal makes a rather cute insult to men as well...

The uncovered meat is the problem! If it was covered the cat wouldn't have. It would have circled around it and circled around it, then given up and gone.

So he is in effect saying that men are as dumb as, and to be treated as cats. Like if you put a tent over a woman, then guys, who are always on the prowl, will be utterly confounded, unaware of the tasty morsel inside.

Not quite, you just picked up on the feral cat analogy with regards to being sexual predators, but he has added a subtle twist by saying they are not just feral predators but they are too fracking dumb to work out there is a quarry in disguise under their very noses. I think we have an 'adding insult to injury' situation. We aren't just rapists, we are stupid to boot.

So that's india all out for 249 on what looks like a good batting wicket. Ominously for England, Glenn McGrath was looking much closer to his best. 12 runs and Tendulkar's wicket from his first 6 overs.

Oh good, we're back on the important business.

Should be a good match then if our batting actually grow a backbone and hang around.

If he really thinks women are a tool from the devil, he doesn't know all that much about reproducing. Why would an enemy make something key to surviving?

just what the Islamic world needs, another batsh*t insane cleric with a big freakin' mouth.

I imagine I'll get roundly flamed for this:

I wonder what the Middle East will think of us when we finally are forced to move away from a petroleum-based economy. In the grand scheme of things, it's Western-style capitalism that fuels the Middle East. Once we stop buying, what then? We sure as hell won't have any political or economic (or military) interests in that part of the world. Except for Israel, and those who oppose the state of Israel likely won't have enough money to make any real trouble for them.

    The West:
"Thanks very much for all the oil. Please feel free to go as crazy as you like."

    The Middle East:
    "but....whu....great Satan...jihad...Pepsi-Cola..."
