In anticipation of attaining my 500th post, I've begun working on an avatar. I haven't done much work with animation before, so I'd appreciate any feedback/advice. Here's what I've got so far.

yeah, i'd slow it down some. like, a lot. it might actually be pretty cool to see how slowly you could get it to turn.

It isn't as big as it could be, now that the limit is 75x75. Looks good to me, though. It only makes me dizzy if I stare at it for a while.

Okay, so here it is slowed down a little. The problem is, now you can see the individual frames. I could add extra frames inbetween, I suppose, but that would be a lot of work (I did this frame by frame).

Edit: Actually, I take that back. I could see the gaps in Fireworks, but it looks fine now. I'm going to try another one, even slower.

Edit2: Now I've got them both up. I'm really noticing the gaps between frames in the second one, the one on the right. But the first one looks pretty good, I think.

Okay, here it is, bigger, and with a slightly subtler color. I'm also trying to do transparency, which may or may not work.

Have it stop for a few seconds when it reaches an M or a W - that way its not as bad and you can have a faster animation and not drive everyone crazy :D

    Looks good!

Don't worry about transparency. All the backgrounds of the posts are the same color now, so you can just use DigitalColor Meter (Applications/Utilities) to match the gray color of the post background. Much easier than having transparency.

I like the slower version done by Mr. Anderson better. My suggestion would be how about blue, even better aqua blue.

Not everything needs to be blue - if it was then things would be a little dull around here.

Sorry, but green is my least liked color! You are correct, all one color would be boring.

    Hmmm...

I'm not sure about it stopping every time. What if we just stopped once after every "w" and "m", rather than every letter? I think Mr. Anderson's version diminishes the illusion of rotation.

I personally like the original...A lot. I don't think it needs much slowing down at all and I thought that stopping it between turns took a lot away from it.

I could have shrunk it (looks bad) or cropped it the other way, but the mystery of what's in the glass (or lack thereof) makes it art. ;)

Actually, which software are you all using to create the animations?

Well, I'm using Fireworks. I'm sure there's better software out there for it, but Fireworks works pretty well.

    Well, this should be it...

This is post number 500, so in a few minutes I should have my avatar up and running. Drum roll, please!

Edit: Well, that was anticlimactic. Either I'm an idiot or something's messed up with the forums. I'm a 6502 but I have no option to upload my avatar. Hopefully this will be cleared up soon....
