    Hey,

Just bought myself a BRAND NEW 20" iMac from Mac Store in Sheffield.

    Pictures here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wasim931/

I just noticed, theres a white blemish on the screen when I open FrontRow when the screen goes black.

Theres a small chip of the plastic on the top right hand corner.

And FrontRow and other stuff is really laggy, my 15" PowerBook is better than this.

I'm going straight to the Mac Store tomorrow and demanding an EXCHANGE!

What do you guys this of this?

Take it back, but do so nicely...

Yup, you should definitely take it back.

But, before demanding an exchange, why not just simply ask nicely for one? Keep in mind that it isn't the fault of the person behind the desk that your new iMac is dinged up. Yes, it shouldn't have left the factory the way it was ... but that's the fault of the QA inspector on the factory floor, not the clerk behind the counter.

I sympathize with you - I've purchased several machines over the years that had problems out of the box (most notably, Sony VAIO laptops; 4 of them). But the person behind the desk is there to help you. If you treat them well, they should reciprocate. If they don't, then you should start demanding.

Nah that's a typical BC, Canadian response. For somewhere like Sheffield, walk straight up to the counter, throw the box at them (over your head if you can) and scream "this is not ****** acceptable" ... ;)

    I agree with you guys.

I think I will take it back tomorrow FIRST THING, ask for a refund and purchase it from the Apple Website.

What do you fellow Mac Buddies think of this?

    Please do help me...

You could go through the Online Store but I'm typing on an iMac-tel bought "right off the assembly line" and have yet to have a problem...you could just ask for a replacement and if that doesn't work then definitely go through the online store.

I think you should ask for a replacement and open it up right there in the store and test it out. They'll let you do it, and it will give you peace of mind...

    Hmm.. I'm really confused.

This had really knocked my confidence with Apple. I've been using apple computers since 2000 with the birth of the first iBook.

Its just that I live 2 hours away from my Apple Store, and taking it back to them would be a pain.

Could I please have some more reassurance from you guys.

Why us? We're not the ones who can okay a swap. We don't have that authority.

Give AppleCare a call, see if they tell you to take it back to the store w/ a guarantee of a swap/replacement. Make sure to ask for names, specific case #, etc. If you're still unsure even after speaking to AppleCare, then call the store itself, ask to speak to the manager and see what s/he has to say.

This is what I'd ask for as well... I wouldn't bother ordering through the Apple Online store, if I'm already in a physical Apple Store.

I have a perfect iMac 20" CoreDuo. Is your faith in Apple restored?

Seriously, Apple makes great computers. Some of them have flaws, though. This is true of ANYTHING that is mass produced. There are, as far as I can tell, no more or less faulty Apple computers than by any other major manufacturer (perhaps even fewer, although other make far more computers, so you're more likely to see faulty machines), nor are there any more or less faulty Apple computers today than at any time in the recent past. I certainly have seen no evidence to that effect.

    Cheers guys.

    This really helps alot,

I think I will just ask for a replacement and test it out in the store before I take it home.

It's actually an Ontario, Canada response. I'm just passing thru Kamloops. :)

And it's also the response of someone who has been on the other side of the desk, wondering why somebody he has never met before is screaming at him about returning a product, when all the customer had to do was *ask*.

They are usually pretty good about flawed units. The nick in the plastic might not do it but the splotchy screen should definitely get you a replacement. Good luck!

Why would you buy the new one online if you're going back to the store to return the current one anyway?

Unless there is some BTO option you're after, then just get an exchange in-store. If you buy online it'll be more difficult to exchange again in case there is another problem...

I frankly would do much less thinking, go exchange and be done with it. You do indeed very much get my simpathies and understanding for the frustration and I would feel no different. In fact, in an ideal world, Apple should do something for you (like a gift certificate, discount...), for causing the inconvenience, but that is unlikely.

Unfortunately these are things that do happen. It never happened to me in decades of purchasing Mac products, so I could imagine expectations are usually higher.

Sorry dude, big pain the behind indeed!

Just placed my order for my new iMac.

Are you Sure that SPOTLIGHT is not INDEXING???

That is a common cause of lagging in the Macs in the very beginning.
