I read that it's possible to back up your SMS and MMS messages to iCloud, but is it possible to do it through iPhone 4 with iOS4?

they do backup via icloud only but only with iOS5.

Are you referring to icloud.com? If so, your SMS/MMS message are not available there.

They are, however, backed up when you back up to iCloud on your iPhone/iPad/iPod. That way, if one fails and you need to restore from the backup, your SMS/MMS messages will be restored.
