backup and organise photos off iphone to macbook

Hey all

Prior to the Yosemite upgrade, I used IPhoto to backup, catalogue, and generally organise photos off my iphone to my macbook. Now IPhoto is gone and I don't know how I do this.

I do not use ICloud as the quantity of photos exceeds the free storage.

Use the photos app instead? It should migrate your iPhoto library on the first open.
