How can I use Disk Utility to backup my hard drive. I have gone through the tutorals and really can't find anything that says how to backup the entire volume.

I know symantec makes a great backup program,(Ghost). Is there a 3rd party software for Mac OS X that does the same thing?

SuperDuper (shareware, but with a free version that I personally use) and Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware) are both good programs. I'll suggest either of them.

Disk Utility can do it. Click on your hard drive in DU, go to File -> New -> Disk Image from disk0. (disk0 is your Macintosh HD.)

How would you go about restoring it if you don't have an external HD? (I plan to backup to my PC over my network)

It makes... an image. It should be bootable as long as you make it uncompressed and the same format as the image you're copying.
