I have noticed the following as I attempt to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5:
• It has been stuck in the "Backing up iPhone.." for over an hour, with the progress bar moving slower than a turtle.
• The "Backing up iPhone..." dialog box is a modal dialog, which means you cannot interact with any other part of iTunes while the backup is happening.
• The "Backing up iPhone.." operation is not only slowing down iTunes, it is slowing down my entire Macbook Pro
• "Error 3200" is trending on Twitter, which means thousands of people are having the same problems and this is not an isolated issue.

Conclusion:
My only wish is that Steve Jobs were still alive so that someone could get fired for this botched launch

Got the same problem here after multiple attempts? Is this error server related? I'm not getting an error just seems to be hanging at iTunes backup.

Just have some frigging patience. That's all! The servers are overloaded, just wait a bit!

Having the same issue here with my iPad. Let it sit over an hour without the progress bar moving. Tried to cancel, but had to force quit out of iTunes. I restarted both iTunes and the iPad and tried again to the same results.

What does server over load have to do with me installing the OS? Its dumb I understand the download portion but worry bout verification later or just make it dumbed down...I mean I have it installed but I keep getting the error as well...this is pointless...Oh and my hard drive is getting further raped. Its already partially defective and my family is wondering why a "chain saw noise" is coming from my room .

Now my iTunes completely freezes whenever I attempt to update, no matter how many times I restart both iTunes and my iPhone.

Epic fail indeed.

If it is true that this problem is caused by excess server load, it is only going to get worse over the next 8 hours as people on the east and west coast get home from work and try it out.

Epic fail for sure.

No, it does not happen every year. I have never had a software update where I tried to install it, but was still in a state of failure 3+ hours later. This has never happened.

This is Apple's biggest fail since the Mobile Me launch.

I'm trying to download the Ipsw files directly from apple first as described in this thread. I will see if that still causes the hangup when backing up.

2.5 hours so far and none of my three devices have been updated. Gonna be burnin the midnight oil for sure.

you can skip the back up but "shift + update (or restore)". but you have re-sync everything later. worth it since you can do it over wifi while play around iOS 5

That didn't work for me. Still went to the backup first.

Same here. Keeps going into backup first.

Is it backing upon apple's servers? I've never seen a backup take this long.

Everyone will tie this error to "this is happening because Steve Jobs isn't Apple CEO anymore".

Just started over again and noticed the backup screen said it can take "over and hour to complete." Looks like I will let it run unmolested until midnight. See if I can get it to work.

It's finally upgrading, after 4 times.

But I think the backup issue happens because it literally downloads EVERYTHING from you phone to the upgrade 'backup.' Movies, music, apps, etc. I could be wrong, but the timing seems about right. Takes about 20 minutes to copy 12-15GB onto my phone normally, which is about what I have.

That's my guess. If so, it's horribly designed.

It has been two days. I don't have enough patience for that. It has been on step 2 of six for the past two days. I need to use my phone. I can't wait this long.
