In previous experience, and a google search suggests Mac terminal is no different, hitting the tab key will get Bash to automatically complete a filename for you. It isn't working for me - it just beeps. I have hit it multiple times and it doesn't cycle through possibilities it just keeps beeping and doing nothing.

Can anyone tell me how to get it working?

    Thanks.

It should beep once (when there's multiple options), then hitting the tab again should give you a list of files (it doesn't cycle through options, never has)... works fine for me...

It does it when you don't type anything, but say I type "cd des", I would expect it to complete it to "cd desktop".

Maybe I'm getting it confused with other shells though?

Tabcomplete is case sensitive - even though OSX's filesystem isn't. Try:

    cd Des (tab)
