I've got a problem with my pb G4 whereby it will intermittently just switch itself off when there is apparently still about 45mins or so of battery life left. It's a pretty new battery, sent to me as a replacement for my old recalled one. As luck would have it, my applecare expired last week, so I'm wondering if there's something I can do, like reset power management or recalibrate the battery or something?

The two steps you mention would be the first things I would try -- Apple doc on resetting PB battery management is here, and Apple doc on recalibrating is here.

If you're still broken after these two steps, I'd find a genius bar. Applecare or no, you're Mac is going to need juice.

If thedude110's fabulous advice doesn't help, then take the battery out and plug it back in again before resetting the PMU and re-calibrating. :)
