Access to Apple Music's Beats 1: Replay feature, which allows users to listen to previously broadcast Beats 1 radio shows, is now limited only to Apple Music subscribers. MacRumors readers and users on reddit have both noticed a recent change that no longer allows those without an Apple Music subscription to access Beats 1 radio segments they've missed.

According to the reddit thread, past Beats 1 radio shows became inaccessible to non-subscribers approximately two weeks ago. The Apple Music Help Twitter account has confirmed that Beats 1 Replays now require an active Apple Music subscription.

@adrow You are correct. Beats 1 replays do require that you have an active subscription with Apple Music. - Apple Music Help (@AppleMusicHelp) October 30, 2015

The Beats 1: Replay feature was first introduced in early August when all Apple Music users were still under the free three-month trial period. It offers full show replays with guests, commentary, and music. Without access to Beats 1: Replay, those who do not subscribe to Apple Music will only be able to listen to missed Beats 1 radio content by catching it on the second playthrough, 12 hours after the first airing.

Attempting to access a past Beats 1 radio show via an artist's page now brings up an Apple Music login screen for non-subscribers, while subscribers are still able to access the content. Playlists are also inaccessible, but content uploaded to a Beats 1 radio DJ's connect page, such as select interviews, can be listened to without a subscription.

Access to past Beats 1 shows is not the only feature limited to Apple Music subscribers. Asking Siri questions about music charts, such as "What was the top song in March of last year?" is off limits to non-subscribers. Siri tells non-subscribers that an Apple Music subscription is required, likely because these music chart questions cause the song in question to begin playing.

Apple's decision to limit past Beats 1 shows to Apple Music subscribers has undoubtedly been done in an effort to encourage Beats 1 radio fans to purchase a subscription, which is priced at $9.99 per month for individuals and $14.99 for families. In a recent interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple Music had 6.5 million paying customers along with 8.5 million still on the free trial.

(Thanks, Adam!)

Has anyone else noticed that the "Featured Tab" and access to past shows is only working on iOS. I'm an Apple Music subscriber but when I view the St Vincent Mixtape page or the Alligator Hour in iTunes it only shows the Playlists and Connect tabs. Past Shows are only available on iOS.

My biggest gripe thus far with Apple Music is not being able to listen to past One Mixes that they do each week. They leave the replays up for a little bit, but eventually pull them off.

I'm not sure many people want to listen to many past shows, but electronic music fans may want to listen to a One Mix for years to come, as I do with BBC's Essential Mixes. I guess I'm going to have to start ripping the audio from the replays so I can save them for offline use later.

Such a shame they don't see value in allowing me to listen to past shows forever.

Having to use the Apple Music.app was in large part the dealbreaker that made me not renew after the trial expired. I couldn't care less about Beats 1.

Apple's really taking lessons from Google in how to build unusable UI's.

I really hate what Apple is doing with music. The music app in iOS 9 feels like a major leap backward. And no, I am not buying beats 1.

I don't understand it ... it isn't like audio takes up that much storage space..

I've heard that this station plays mostly hip hop and rap; so much for Cook's diversity drive.

I'd like to see a station that plays music with no talking. Did the original iTunes Radio do that? We never got it in the UK.

I can't imagine there are a whole lot of people willing to pay $10 to listen to old Beats 1 radio shows. Apple should have kept them free and used them to promote Beats 1 and Apple Music.

Tim Cook couldn't pay me $10 billion to listen to Beats 1, even if he had a coffee with me.

Last time I used it yes ... it was just music. These are 2 reasons I will never use the service. A) I can't stand hiphop, I like dance music and other types of electronic music. B) I want to listen to music, not some talk to me about the music.

Honestly, I think the service will die off in a few years. It's been poorly executed.

Yeah I listen to Beats 1! It was me who submitted the story above.

I think it's a real shame because while you can still listen to Beats 1 live without a subscription, all the replay shows are gone now for non subscribers. In the UK we're used to being able to listen to pretty much any radio show on demand with the BBC's iPlayer Radio and Radioplayer which has most of the commercial stations on it.

Because Beats 1 is international a lot of the best shows are on at times when I can't really listen live, so it was always good to catchup on the replays later. I guess these changes must make sense from a business point of view for them but I wonder how many people will just stop listening to the shows rather than subscribing to Apple Music?

That's what I'll be doing - I'm too deeply invested in Spotify at the moment. Luckily some of the really good shows like Soulection have Soundcloud pages (and that's been going a long time before Beats 1) but I'll be sad to miss out on some really good shows like Abstract Radio and the One Mix.

Good point. I guess "diversity" means all hip hop.

Surely they have to make the replays part of the paid package?

Someone could know certain songs were played during a show and slide the progress bar to those points of the show, thus choosing the song they want to listen to.
