I am not bad at using computer software but I have no clue on fixing anything if something stops working. I also am not a specialist in deleting files i don't use etc. etc. I used to have an Mac classic which had a utility software that seemed to fix everything but i have no idea what it is was called. Can anyone advise me on a Utility programme that is a must for a muppet to keep my iMac healthy.

I strongly recommend you don't use a thing. There are utilities like Onyx out there but I reckon that if you think of yourself as a muppet then it's probably going to do more harm than good letting yourself loose on such a powerful app. OSX has very good inbuilt self-maintenance. Just put your computer to sleep each night and don't worry about cleaning caches, running periodical scripts or repairing permissions. :)

Thanks. I have just moved to India so leaving it on is not advised as we often get power cuts. I have a special battery to avoid such things. An APS i think it is called but it only gives you half an hour. can i manually ask it to do the things you listed while i am at home?

    Thanks

    PS Muppet with computers only!

If it's put to sleep every night, it won't do any self-maintenance. It's better to be awake from Saturday night through Sunday morning when the weekly runs, especially if it's on the first day of the month.

Assuming the OP is using 10.4.2 or later, the scripts will run when the computer wakes from sleep if scripts were missed during sleep. If the computer is off, the scripts will not run at boot.

I find MainMenu even easier than OnyX... :)

All the maintenance you need available from the menu bar...
