Hi guys,

My mum's 23" Apple ACD (clear plastic case, not aluminium) has bitten the dust with a bad cable and the store where she bought it from is saying they can't repair it.

The computer that's running the screen is a 15" 1Ghz PowerBook G4 with the ATi 9600 Radeon (64MB). What's the biggest screen this sucker can output to?

The ideal replacement is a 30" monitor (maybe Apple but the 30 Dell is half the price!)

Will it run?

A new Mac Pro is on the way to replace the G4 but waiting till new revisions to maximize the purchase so it's usable for many years to come.

Any thoughts gratefully received. :)

The max resolution should be 2048 x 1536, which is slightly bigger than the 23" ACD. But it won't support the 30", which requires the dual-link DVI connection.

Ok thanks. The way I read the description for the 3007WFP-HC 30-inch on Dell's site I was hoping it meant that to run it at full resolution you needed a dual link DVI card but I guess the little PowerBook would have trouble with it.

The soon to-be-bought Mac Pro would be fine though, right? Probably be going for the 2.66 or 3Ghz Quad.

The biggest monitors, that this powerbook can handle are 23" Apple Cinema Display or the DELL 2407WFP (and of course other <24" monitors), but a Mac Pro will handle the 30" ACD easily, even with the stock nVidia GeForce 7300 Video Card, you can use the 30" ACD with a lower resolution (1280x800) until you get the Mac Pro.

Dell 24"

The Dell 27" has the same res as the 24" but is 3" bigger, so the image is a bit bigger but there's no extra pixels.

I was going to ask why not repair you 23"ACD, but then i saw you live in Aus.

Nice and sunny but SFA Apple support eh? ;)
