I've noticed that my 2 month old black Macbook is losing charge extremely quickly while asleep (when I've finished using the computer I simply close the lid).

For example, before I went for my dinner tonight I had charge of approx 50%. When I returned 30 mins later it was down to 35%.

My computer usually hold its charge pretty well with around 4 hours, so I'm quite mystified.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

All computers will lose some charge while sleeping, but I don't know if they'll lose charge this quickly. My girlfriend had left her PowerBook G4 sleeping for 3 days ,if I remember correctly, and came back and it still started up. Granted, it was on reserve power, but it was on for 3 days without shutting itself off. I've also left my black MacBook sleeping overnight, and don't think I've lost that much battery power. I'm not sure if it's a battery issue, power management issue, or if I'm just wrong, but I don't think the computers I've used have done this.

While you're correct, it should loose charge while sleeping (unless plugged in of course), I think 50%-->35% in only 30 minutes is a bit much. I've left my iBook sleeping all night on battery and it still had a charge in the morning.

Don't waste time with contemplating if it is broken or not. This obviously is not normal, go visit an Apple store. (I had to drive 1.5 hrs. for the closest Apple store to me).

They do, but 15% in half an hour? I'd expect that of a 5 year old Powerbook which has had hard use!

My previous laptop (a 17" PB, which was a bit of a power guzzler itself!) held is charge much better while asleep, and I would expect it, and the Macbook, to lose charge of approx 1-2% in half an hour.

The Macbook holds its charge extremely well during use, only when it is asleep does it lose whole chunks of charge.

Did the computer actually go to sleep when you closed the lid? If it did, could it have immediately woken back up if it was bumped or something?

That has happened to my iBook a few times.

Maybe the OP should charge his MacBook up, put it to sleep (close lid) for another 30 minutes and see if it looses 15% again.

And if you put the computer to sleep manually without closing the lid? Maybe the sensor in the lid is faulty and it does not put the computer to sleep.

From 1am -> 7am this morning my laptop lost around 7% charge.

    This seems ok to me?

That seems more normal. So then the bad news is that very likely the sensor in your lid is not working properly, but that is a str8 forward complaint to go to the Mac store with. Good luck.

Last night I actually decided to put the computer to sleep just by closing the lid (as I usually do). Tonight I'll be trying to manually select 'sleep' and will see if there's any change.

Of note is the fact that my girlfriends year old 12" iBook only lost 2-3% during the same time (and in the same room) last night.
