no offense to this guy but are we sure this is a 10.4.8 bug? seems more to me the 10.4.8 caused one of his own preferences to be corrupted...has he duplicated this?

Yeah, really... People in the forums are all about blue tints and rainbow lines of doom, but no one is complaining about the "black rectangle of mystery" that i've seen so far.

Oh well, perhaps someone on the forum will luck out and it'll help them.

I had missing Bluetooth when I updated and forgot to restart my Mac, (was in the middel of something that couldn't be interupted and after it had done, had forgot). I switched my keyboard and mouse off and every time I tried to use them after I switched them back on, nothing. I went into bluetooth setup to see if I could re-pai and it picked nothing up. I remembered the update, restarted and okay.

This guy is just plain foolish. This is not a bug, it's probably something that he screwed up. Anyway, it hasn't happened to me or any of the about 30 macs that I've updated.

Why? This only happened to this one guy, and it was probably something he did! I know it didn't happen on my system.

I got exactly the same issue on one of my G5 DP 2.7's, of which I have several which are generally identical.

the Issue was a bit confusing, but was rectified in the same manner as he suggested.

So yes on some installations the Zoom rectangle is visible even when Zoom is turned off. Further on the effected Mac in my case Zoom no longer works.

I've had no issue whatsoever with 10.4.8 - its been smooth sailing for me. Just like any other update.

I had this happen when I installed the Wireless Mighty Mouse drivers on both my Dual G5 and Powerbook G4 under 10.4.7. I recognized where it came from because I'd played with most of the Universal Access preferences at one time or another, but I can see where it would be confusing for most people. I'd call it a bug.

It's a genuine bug re: how Zoom functions...

    It's a genuine bug.

If you'd set up the preview rectangle prior to 10.4.8 using the Zoom Options stated in "Black rectangle appears after Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update", then the preview rectangle would only appear if Zoom was On.

Under 10.4.8, if you have the two Zoom Options set that are the minimum required for the preview rectangle to appear, the rectangle appears regardless of Zoom being On or Off.

Clearly, how Zoom behaves with respect to the settings for the preview rectangle have changed in 10.4.8.

It may not be a widespread problem given that many folks may have never set the minimum required Zoom Options necessary for the preview rectangle to appear, but if they did so before 10.4.8, they now see the preview rectangle regardless of Zoom being On or Off after applying the 10.4.8 update.

This may only affect PPC-based Macs.

There have been additional reports of this problem on the Apple Discussions. For example, in

    this topic and

    this topic.

Found a fix for my problem - under Universal Access - select "OFF" for Voice Over. Hm. Wonder how that one came on.
