So anyone that's been watching the heated format wars, Blueray looks to be the most prospectful selection for Macs.

My question as being somewhat of a noob to the hardware of Macs(former PC builder), is what are the chances I can upgrade my current dvd drive to a blueray drive in a MBP?

I'm sure there will be hacks, but can I do an install that won't void my apple care?

    If possible at all?

You can probably upgrade it once a slot-loading Blu-Ray notebook drive comes out. It most certainly will void your warranty given the optical drive is a non-user replaceable part but you're more than willing to give it a shot. You're probably better off getting an external if you want one that badly, likely be cheaper as well.

I'm going to wait until they come down in price then get an external burner that is PC and Mac compatible. Hook that up to either my iMac, (assuming still not built in when I get), or MacBook Pro, but retaining an option to connect to PC if needed.

Blu Ray in a notebook will be a massive battery drain, so you will need to run the Macbook of the mains, which means you might as well get a mains powered external drive. In my experience a notebook on even the most stable surface tends to get a higher number of failures than a desktop or external.
