So, my black C2D MacBook has been up and running for the past three hours, and there is absolutely no hint of CPU whine!

That's my happy ending to a very sad tale of one bad rev. A MacBook after another...

This is the FOURTH MacBook I've had in the past six months. The first one was damaged right out of the box (misaligned case, and screwdriver scratches all over the bottom), so Apple replaced it. The replacement machine developed a really loud, grindy noise coming from the fan, and after two trips to the Apple repair center with no improvement, Apple finally agreed to replace that machine last week. The replacement had a nice, quiet fan, but plenty of CPU whine. Still not ideal, but I was resigned to live with it.

This morning, I learned of the C2D update. Fortunately, every time the Apple Store in Ginza, Tokyo, issued me a replacement machine, they also issued me a new sales receipt. So, I took the replacement MacBook I got last week to the Apple Store today, showed them my receipt for the latest replacement (indicating that I was within the 14-day return period), and asked for an exchange. I had to pay the restocking fee, which amounted to about $150. The way I look at it, I paid Apple about a dollar a day for the last five months to "rent" their rev. A MacBooks until the rev. B's were released!

Needless to say, I'm a very satisfied customer right now.

    Whisper-quiet, super-quick and brand-spankin' new!

No whine, no heat, it is perfect.. except for the LCD.

Colours shimmer on this, I don't know why.

You mean like a rainbow effect, when viewed from a side-angle? I've noticed that with all of the MBs I have had except for, surprisingly enough, this one. (My wife's white MB also has the rainbow effect.)

It hasn't really bothered either of us, though, as we're usually staring at the screen straight-on.

Good that the whine has gone (I think post week 31 build CD MBs also have no trubbs).

A few other q's if you don't mind.

What wireless card is in it (Pre-N?)?
What HD does it ship with (Hitachi? Model?)?
Do you know if the vents are different?
What battery life do you see?

    Cheers

Nope it's true, I called the Apple Store in Delaware and they were getting them "as we speak" over the phone.

Odd. My CD Macbook never made a sound.
Was there a whine problem with the 1st gen Macbooks?

I called 3 Apple Stores in my area today and all 3 had the new MB CD2's in stock. However only one had the RAM upgrade in stock. But either way, they are in stock at any Apple Store.

Mine is week 38 and it whines.
It didn't when I bought it, it came about a month later, it stopped again for a day or two, and now it's back this afternoon... I'm hoping it goes away again!

    Um, excuse me?

I assure you, I have a C2D MB sitting on my desktop right now.

    Sounds like envy to me.

The only info about the wireless card that I know of is in the System Profiler, which simply lists it as "AirPort Extreme." Is there somewhere else I can get more info?

The hard drive is a Toshiba MK1234GSX. This concerns me a bit, as my PowerBook G4 12-inch was shipped with a Toshiba HD (different model, of course) that died within a year, and AppleCare replaced it with another Toshiba drive that died a month later. The third replacement, a Fujitsu, was still going strong when I sold the machine a few months back.

I compared the vents on my C2D MB to those on my wife's rev. A MacBook, and they look the same to me. However, I don't have the greatest eyesight, and may be wrong.

I haven't calibrated the battery yet, so I can't comment on battery life yet.

    Hope this info helps!

I can attest that the whine is gone from the C2D MacBooks :) I got mine yesterday over my lunch hour. When I went into the store to buy it they were still putting out the new display models haha. Talk about being quick with having them in stock haha.

I calibrated the battery yesterday and I got about 3:15 with full brightness, airport running, iChat and Safari and I was transferring files from an external HDD most of the time it was running. I had the system working hard and still got over 3 hours. Very nice!

The trouble is, the effect is so pronounced that the sides appear to be dimmer when viewed straight on. Yet if you'd just yank your neck over to one side a bit, that side appears normal.

I'd learn to live with it, I don't like a bright screen anyway and usually work with a dimmed screen, but I can imagine it being fairly annoying.

A few more things I've noticed.

The sound volume is much louder than on the rev. A MacBook. In fact, I'd say it's twice as loud.

The new SuperDrive doesn't "groan" as much when waking up from sleep. It still makes the groan sound, but it's shorter and not quite as grindy sounding.

It's more difficult to slide a disc into the SuperDrive slot. It seems "sticky" or too tight for some reason. It's not like I have to force the disc into the slot, but I do have to push a little harder. This could be just my machine, though, and may not be the same across the board. Nor is this a complaint or a problem for me--just an observation.
