Hi guys! My iBook dual USB broke and I was thinkging of getting a Powerbook. I was wondering if I could run Panther on a 333mhz Powerbook Lombard? And if I can, how fast would it go? Lets say I have 256mb of ram. Thanks.

Panther claims support for G3, G4 and G5, but says nothing about required processor speed. I'm actually interested to know if it will work, too.

They say specifically that you need built-in USB, which the Lombards have. It will run anywhere between okay and painful depending on what you expect or are used to. If you just want to do "the basics" (email, web, chat, word processing) then it will be adequate. I'd still try to max out the RAM though.

    Yes it does!
I have installed it on a friends iMac 333 MHz, with 512MB RAM, works like a charm (for such a "old" Mac).
I did upgrade his HD to a 7200-rpm, for improved performance.

    How about Beige G3s?

I know it doesn't have built-in USB, but has anyone tried to install Panther on a beige G3 desktop? Maybe the installer won't even let you try, but I haven't had the chance to try yet.

I doubt it, Jaguar was a pain to install on Beige G3 models, first 8 gig limit an so...
and those were officially supported by Jaguar.

but then again there will always be people who will manage to get it installed imho.

Panther will *NOT* install (unassisted) on a beige G3.

Hopefully the nice guys writing XPostFacto will release a version that allows Panther to work on beige's, but I tried, and it just won't install. It refuses to even try.

But, it works just fine on a 233MHz rev.b iMac. It's even a little faster than Jaguar. (Which means it's perfectly usable, as long as you have a supported video chip. You won't get Quartz Extreme, but as long as you have some kind of video acceleration, it's usable.)

    Beige G3

I didn't have any trouble installing Jaguar on my Beige G3 either. I guess I will just try Panther on it later today, for the hell of it.

I have a 233 AIO at work running 10.2.6. I don't particularly want to run Panther on it, but I'll still check to see if the installer will let it install.

    Beige G3

The main reason I want to put Panther on the G3 is because I will be running it on my G4 and I would just like to have the same system on both. If I can't then it's really no big deal, just a mild disappointment

I guess you gotta go with a 17" 1.33Ghz Powerbook then. Oh well.

    Beige G3

sure enough, the installer told me that it couldn't install on my beige G3 even before it rebooted to start from CD. Now I will just have to wait for someone smarter than me to figure out a way.
And just my 2 cents, but on my G4/400, i really haven't seen any speed improvement as some have reported. I do still love the changes, definitely worth it.
