Yes as long as your monitor has a DVI connector. You can purchase a HDMi to DVI cable off ebay. I used mine like that until I finally bought a TV

You would still need to have a solution for the audio. The DVI/HDMI cables drop the audio portion altogether.

I'm not sure if the aTV can output sound from the L/R RCA audio jacks when the HDMI port is active. I would assume the optical audio outputs are active.

Yes you can use the audio out while using the HDMI port. I am doing it with mine right now.

Does the monitor have to be widescreen ?
I have a 17" monitor lying around which has a DVI connection, but a 1280x1024 resolution, therefore not widescreen. Would that work ?
    Thanks !

I was wondering about this, but would there be any DRM issues with a DVI connection when watching (rented) HD content?

Can Apple TV output to both monitor and TV?

I have Apple TV connected to flatscreen HD tv via HDMI. I'd like to be able to see the Apple TV interface on a computer monitor if I need to. This is needed when someone is watching TV on the TV and I want to pipe my Itunes (via Apple TV) to my patio on a different zone. With a computer monitor, I can easily choose my music without bothering someone watching the TV. Possible?

I have mine connected to a Dell 2407WFP HD Monitor via HDMI. This monitor has an audio out for the HDMI that I connect to a speaker bar, it just uses a standard 3.5mm stereo cable. Works perfectly fine.
