iPod Cannot charge iPod shuffle without opening iTunes!??

Horribly limiting for my iPod needs. Whenever I insert the iPod hub with attached iPod in my macbook, it flashes orange as if thinking the iPod is used for disc use. However it's not! I have unchecked the 'enable disk use' in settings in iTunes and still it only charges with iTunes open. This is somewhat problematic because it also renders my external usb adaptor/charger useless. The iPod acts the excact same way in the external adaptor!!! ARGH!
(t's not the adaptor btw because it charges my gf's nano fine).

Did you try unticking the box saying open iTunes when this iPod is connected?

Yes. Nothing is checked in the settings. And it doesn't really explain why the f... it won't charge on an external charger...
