MacBook Pro Spec : MacBook Pro (15 inch) Mid 2009 Core2Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB DDR3, Nvidia GeForce 9400M, OS X 10.11 El Capitan. (Owned from new)

Hello,

I upgraded to El Capitan in February and since around the beginning of March my MBP will just freeze and give me the spinning coloured ball every time I try to do anything and I have to turn it off by holding down the power button I will turn it back on and it might work for about 5 minutes or a couple of clicks/tasks then it just locks up again.

I've tried clearing the cache through Terminal and repairing the drive using cmd+R on boot up and neither have solved my problem I'm wondering if El Capitan cannot manage with 4GB of RAM.

What is interesting is I had a similar problem with the same MBP I posted here about back in 2012 but in that instance the MBP wouldn't boot up again after shutting it down from an endlessly spinning coloured ball. I think I ended up taking it back to the Apple Store for them to fix

Can anyone here help with this? Thanks

I really hope the new MBPs come soon as this one is driving me crazy I cannot get any work done

Running El Capitan with 4GB of RAM would definitely not cause this issue.

For the first couple weeks or so on El Capitan, did it work okay, or did it never work properly with El Capitan?

Do you get an error message of any time when this happens? Does it seem like the kernel panic described in this document?

I would be suspect of bad sections on the drive -- do you have the original HDD in there?

Yes it did work for a couple of weeks on El Capitan before the problem started.
I checked that link and I do get the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" dialogue box. I usually just click cancel but I tried the option to reopen my previous windows but no error log appeared for me to check.
I also noticed that if I don't do anything with the machine it will freeze/lock up by its self.

I do work with XAMPP Apache server and MySQL whether that has anything to do with the problem? I was using it at the time this problem first started but it happens now without any of those services running. I do recall the MySQL service not shutting down at one point about 3 weeks ago

Yes original HDD that came with the MBP is in there. I must admit it does sometimes sound like the HDD is having difficulty when spinning

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

Look in this folder for a kernel panic report from the exact date and time of the last crash and post the report here so we can have a look.

It is taking me awhile I couldn't find the library folder in El Capitan so had to look up how to get there (why have they hidden it!?) Finally found the DiagnosticReports folder only to have it then freeze on me again so have had to turn off and on again. There were 3 crash reports in the folder

I will try to post the contents of that last report here hopefully before it all freezes again and I have to restart yet again

It would not be any of those reports. This would be a crash report from the exact date and time of a system crash. The report will look like the one in this post.

I must not have problems with kernel panic then as the folder only contains those 3 files. What can I do now? or do I just need to format it all? Theres a couple of things I need to back up first which is going to be annoying having to keep restarting the machine when it freezes

Are you sure you are looking in the main Library folder and not your users library folder. Triple click the folder path above in this message to select the whole line, then right click and in the Services menu select Reveal in Finder. That will get you to the correct folder.

Okay found the right folder I was in the wrong one as you suspected took awhile as I'm using the forums via my Windows PC so emailing stuff over to myself before Mac crashes again feels like a race.

the latest crash report was today and something to do with my anti virus F-Secure although I doubt it causing every crash as there's other crash reports in the folder with a few from Mozilla. Anyway here it is:

Does this identify the problem? I had another crash report today regarding the sleep wake cycle I just disabled the option to put HDD to sleep when possible but it's still freezing. Sometimes the coloured wheel doesn't even appear it's just a black cursor that I can move but won't respond to clicking on stuff

Try this just as a test. Boot to safe mode by holding the shift key when booting. That will stop all third party launch items and status items (like the anti virus) from running. Run like that for a bit and see if the problem goes away. If it does, that tells us it is some launch or startup item causing the problem.

The crash report identified "Process: fsavd [53]" (F-Secure) as the culprit. Do as Weaselboy suggests. You mention Firefox files in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. If they have the extension .diag, those are usually diagnostic files - which can be triggered if there are some issues (I just so happened to have a bunch of these yesterday for Firefox likely caused by Flash issues). However, the ones to look out for have the extensions .crash, .panic, .hang - you get the idea. It also sounds like even if you don't use Firefox, you still have a problem?

I've used multiple versions of MySQL for years on my various Macs, including the latest version. None caused the issues you're having so I would doubt that is related to your problems.

Okay booted in safe mode ran it for about 10 minutes opening and closing a few apps and it hasn't froze yet. What do I do now?

I'd take a guess and say that your original hard drive is about ready to kick the bucket. It is nearing on 7 years old, which is a very long time for a laptop hard drive that gets jounced around a whole lot.

Keep a backup handy, you may need it sooner than you'd like.

Since Weaselboy is not available at this time:
Working in Safe mode points to a possible startup item(s) causing problems.
Download and run EtreCheck. It will produce a report that you can paste here so people can take a look at it and offer suggestions.

Can I run it in safe mode?
Good point since you can only start in Safe mode. Running EtreCheck in Safe mode would not show all of your normal startup items.

Try starting in Recovery (command + r) and launch Disk Utility and run First Aid on your disk to see if it detects errors.

I have done recovery many times but doesn't help. I can boot without safe mode but it freezes up after a couple minutes use. I could try disabling certain start up items perhaps? Such as F-Secure anti virus as that was my last reported crash file.
[doublepost=1458345206][/doublepost]I've just gone to Activity Monitor and the memory tab is showing 3.52GB of memory is being used the laptop only have 4GB is this the problem?

Can I run it in safe mode?

Yes, it does need to be run in Safe Mode or it won't show what is actually running. Try removing F-Secure first (you can do that from safe mode) then restart and if that does not fix it, download and install Etrecheck while in safe mode, but don't run it. Then restart in regular mode and immediately run Etrecheck to get the report we need to see.

The fact it is fixed by a safe mode boot is pretty much proof positive it is some startup or launch item causing this.

~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is your personal users folder)
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems

Make sure you look in all these folders for anything from F-Secure as well as login items in Users & Groups.

Okay I uninstalled F-Secure and it hasn't solved the problem. I checked
the 4 folders you mention and there's nothing from F-Secure in them. There's a few things from RIM and Blackberry which I tried to remove awhile ago (as no longer needed) by dragging the application to the bin and it didn't work.

Anyway here is the report from EtreCheck:

There is no easy way to do this. So we know one of these launch items is the issue, and the only way to figure out which one is to remove them until we find the culprit. So I'll address them each, then you can work on it. You will need to reboot and test after each removal. What I usually do is make a folder on the Desktop then remove these items to that folder so you can put it back if you want. I like to remove half on the list at a time, then test to narrow it down.

Are you still using this VPN? It is not running, but remove it if you don't need it. Delete Hotspot Shield from the /Applications folder and also this /Library/Application Support/ folder. Note this is the main Library folder and not your users library.

Everything else looks good.

Well I got rid of everything and it still freezes on me. I think it looks like I'm going to have to do a format of the drive. If I do I think I'll not bother with El Capitan again

There are preference panes for NTFS software which is pretty old. I see it in the preference panes but not anywhere else (but I don't know how that would show up elsewhere in EntreCheck). Do you still use NTFS?

As suggested by some of the posters, your hard drive may be going bad. It could be other hardware as well. Since we seemed to have exhausted the most obvious software possibilities, and this seemed to have happened a couple weeks after the installation of El Capitan, that's probably the next place to look. Although the fact that you can run in Safe Mode is a contrary indicator. Obviously you can try going back to an older OS but you should try running the Apple Hardware Test first. The AHT doesn't do a real comprehensive check of the HDD, but it maybe a tossup as to which would be easier for you - going back to an older OS or finding and running a good disk diagnostic program.

Before you format you may want to configure Time Machine and do a backup first, unless you already backup your data via other method or don't care.

FWIW, I think your HDD is showing early signs of failure (another reason to get a backup done.)
