I am just starting my journey from pc to mac. I purchased a used computer that came with 10.4. I went through the initial set-up, but it appears as though iphoto is not available. Can someone tell me how to start over?

Does it make sense that it is missing? I did get a message saying iphoto application not available?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Welcome.

iPhoto may not have been installed. Insert disc 1 of the OS X software. There's an option to "install additional programs," or something to that effect.

It's likely missing because whoever you bought your computer from likely performed a clean install of OS X before passing it along to you.

Thank you for the information. Since I didn't get the disc with the computer, I assume I will need to buy them if I want it. If so, I will probably buy Leopard.

You Will Also Want To Buy iLife As The Program You Want Does Not Come With Leopard.

iPhoto and iLife only come on new systems, it does not come with the OS. Spend the $79 for it.

Did you re-install or re-format the computer?. I had the same problem, or should i say still have the same problem about the missing iphoto. I have read from other blogs on google about apple not having iphoto installed on there recovery discs for the new macs...so if you have deleted it or re-formated
then I think you have lost it for good. I have no idea if you can download it from iphoto website with out paying for it again..maybe just mentioning the mistake that had happened with it. I am sure we are not the only people here that have lost iphoto..and did not have the iphoto disc to start with!. Or maybe get the shop to put it back on?. Like you, I am suffering with a missing iphoto as well, so I do not know really what to tell you..but I will keep you updated if I do manage to find a way to get it back on.

I have Leopard and far to me knowing, it does NOT have iphoto installed on it, which to me sounds absolutely bizarre...people DO re-format or re-install there macs..and if that's the case, then what is stopping them from losing iphoto?!. Apple never warned me about saving that program before I had to re-install!.

If you reinstall using the system disks that came with your computer, you will have whatever version of iLife and thus iPhoto that came with the computer when it was originally purchased. You will also have many more apps -- they will vary depending on what was included on the new machine. If you install just from the Leopard (or Tiger or whatever) disks, then, no, you will have to purchase iLife separately. The iLife apps are included when you purchase your machine, but are not bundled with OS updates.

This is getting Absurd!. Are you telling me after I have re-formatted my Mac, that I have now lost my whole ilife which iphoto came from?. So basically i have to now go out and buy ilife, even though it was installed on my Mac for FREE?!!!.
Apple should let you re-download this software for free, IF it already came on your computer for free. Most people re-format or re-install there computers, and most computer companies know this...hence that is why they have ALL the programs INSTALLED on the recovery discs!.

I STILL DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO ON MY RECOVERY DISCS, NOR MY HARDRIVE!, and it seems I am not the only person suffering with this problem. So why doesn't Apple wise up and do something about it, instead of being extremely greedy and tedious about there software. I am not a happy chappie.

iLife only comes on the original system discs that ship with the mac. If you don't have those discs, you have to buy it separately. If you have those discs, you can still upgrade your OS and install iLife from the previous version system discs. Do you understand? It ships with the mac for free, otherwise you buy it.

Well I hardly think Apple are being greedy, they did give it to you in the first place. I'm sure Apple believe that most people *don't* format and reinstall their Macs. I haven't in over two years except for when I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and then I did the research necessary to tell me that I'd have to buy iLife.

Don't blame someone else for your lack of research and mistake.

Well I for one am unsure what research could have been done in order to have beforehand knowledge that all new systems come with iLife, but if you were to do an erase & install you'll be left without iLife.

In some ways I think I also thought that iLife would come on the install discs that came with my PowerBook. I never had to do an erase and install but 3 years later to hopefully solve another issue I will. I have since bought two other versions of iLife so I am set, but I can see where the user is coming from...even if this anger is a bit over the top.

I think my rage is coming more from my frustration. At the end of the day, I have re-installed my 2 recovery discs that came with the 2008 Mac (leopard operating system)... and still no iphoto. I have even done a search, once I have installed the 2 discs, and still nothing.

The reason I reformat every month of two is because on previous laptops I have had ( PC , not Mac's) , this is my first Mac.. With PC Laptops I find you have to reformat or re-install all the time to keep them up to scratch and working like new.

PC's have a nasty habit of catching anything and everything, and sometimes even the best software can not recover the laptop, or make it work 100 percent like new again!. My laptops go through a lot of abuse due to my work. Already My new MacBook pro 15 inch started to slow down and have small signs of ceasing up (even though it is been upgraded to the maximum).

As soon as my laptops start to misbehave or show signs of problems that will affect my work, then i re-format the whole thing. Maybe I don't have to with Mac's. But I do find it hard to believe that they are also 100 percent immune to all the nasties out there. Maybe i will be better off to go out and buy Iphoto, more easy for me when I have to keep doing this.

Maybe I should have more faith in Macs

    I finally found my iphoto!!!!!!!!!

I didn't realize that I got the install discs with the computer. I thought I got the discs for os 9, but I look closer tonight and realized two of the discs were for 10.2. I put disc 2 in and found an install for additional applications. I went ahead and installed them and they included iphoto.

    Yea!!!

Thanks for all of the feedback

    Yeah...

Dude, you're overlooking something. Quit freaking out. And yes, you sound like the only one with this problem, which usually means it's user error.

FOOOUND IT !!!!!. For some unknown reason my Mac was hiding it. I even tried a search on it. I re-installed the 2 discs again...and used a software that searches deep on my Mac. The file was in a strange place, also the file was slightly alterd for some unknown reason, maybe that's why the search program could not find it...but now it's here :D . Sooo any one with leopard and a new 2008 Mac should know, there is a copy of ILIFE IPHOTO on there cd's.

Thanks for your help everyone :)

    Missing Iphoto

    Hi there.

Install the first disc. You can do a complete re-instal with the (one) disc with out loosing all your information. This should shift everything back in the right order again.

To be truthful when you start having missing programs, or they can not be found, I would suggest you do a complete re-instal. The guidelines should be pretty straight forward. It will tell you that you do not sufficient space for a complete instal on the same hard drive, once the disc re-boots.

After that, you should have a menu come up that gives you a choice of wether you want to keep the files that are on your hard drive. I think there are three boxes to tick, I would suggest to tick the first two boxes. This will also keep a file thats about 11gig that saves all previous settings and information. Ideal if you do need to go back to that, if things go wrong.

Once the disc has installed (don't panic if it takes a long time, it all depends on how many things it has to save on your hard drive). Once it is installed, do an update... you will find most of the programs that came with the disc, as well as the security updates will have to be updated again. Once that is done, go to search and type in Iphoto. It should come up. If not try "control" and click the mouse, or track pad on a random pic (its apples version of right clicking like on a PC). Near the top of that pop up menu, you should have an option of saying "open with", hopefully it might come up on there as well.

I have had this problem many times now. I hope those instructions work out for you :)
