Online automotive news and information site Autoblog today announced its 2016 Technology of the Year Awards, naming Apple's CarPlay platform as the winner of the Technology of the Year award in the Feature category.

According to Autoblog, its annual awards are designed to honor the best technology features in a vehicle along with the vehicle that showcases "the most transformative, integrated technologies" in the automotive experience. While CarPlay won the Feature award, the Tesla Model S P90D won the car award.

Autoblog named CarPlay as its Feature award winner due to the platform's ease of use and the way it improves the lives of the consumers who use it. Winners were selected based on testing by the Autoblog editorial staff and a guest judge from Engadget.
This year, the winner of the Technology of the Year Feature Award was awarded to Apple CarPlay. "Apple's CarPlay represents the impact technology is having on our connected lives and brings an experience that is easy to use and enhances the lives of consumers who use this product" said Stephen Rouse, Autoblog's Director of Product and Technology.
Introduced in 2014, CarPlay, which brings iOS to in-car infotainment systems and dashboards, is finally becoming a mainstream product as manufacturers have started adding support for the feature into many 2016 vehicles.

CarPlay will be featured in more than 100 new 2016 and 2017 models from 21 auto manufacturers like Audi, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Volvo, and more. The platform is also readily available in aftermarket systems from companies like Pioneer, Kenwood, JBL, and Alpine.

I have carplay. Its buggy and unreliable. It locks up intermittently when you plug it in.
It is flacky if you have the audacity to plug it in at some point in the startup process of the car stereo.
Intermittently after you plug in the phone to the car the phone loses all sound making ability and you have to reboot the phone to get it back. It only does this when interacting with carplay.
Sometimes the carplay using siri won't accept voice commands (granted thats rare)

Sounds like your radio's software needs an update

As an iOS public beta user I've submitted feedback on its wonkiness.

Luckily I've figured out when it gets wonky for me on a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. If I plug it in while its booting I don't have a problem. Once the the UI appears I have to wait till it's completely done booting and only then can I plug it in. So I've resorted to getting in the vehicle, starting the it, then plugging my iPhone in. Works like a charm.

By the way, I love CarPlay.

If it's really such a buggy hell of a mess, and still won that award, I'm afraid to see what the competition had...

Have you actually used CarPlay? I use it everyday and my radio (AppRadio 4) has the latest firmware update. It is still buggy as hell.

The issue and bugs may be related to pioneer rather than CarPlay. I have CarPlay on my 2016 Honda Civic factory unit and it works great no issues so far.

Lol, wut?
That's not even a possibility. It could be software (CarPlay), or hardware (a "rushed to market" head unit).
The car? Lol. That's like saying if I burnt something cooking... "it's probably not an issue with the stove or timer- it's probably your house!"
What were you even thinking when you posted that??
*scratches head*

Time to change the car...

A "true" brainwashed Apple advocate!

iPhone no longer works because of a software update? Change your iPhone to the latest model!

iPad no longer works because of a software update? Change your iPad to the latest model!

$500 Headphones no longer work because they are considered out of date? Buy a new set of headphones that will only work on your Apple devices!

CarPlay no longer works? Simple. Go and buy a new car with a version that works.

I guess Big Blue is no longer Big Brother in today's age....

FCA US LLC, please hurry up and support this. UConnect is absolutely one of the worst systems I have used. I know you have plans to update UConnect, but all I really want is CarPlay.

I clicked the Comments link and was rewarded with precisely what I expected: a bunch of people either whining about how buggy CarPlay is (implying that's how it always is for everyone - yet somehow it wins awards and is being adopted by auto maker after auto maker) or trolling about how brainwashed anyone is who suggests otherwise.

Maybe MR can save everyone time and come up with a thread template that inserts the name of the tech du jour followed by the usual whining and trolling.

I've been using CarPlay without any issues on a 2016 VW Golf R, with MIB II (that's the head unit's name) firmware version 0245. No issues at all to report. Phone works beautifully, FaceTime audio sounds fantastic, navigation works great etc. It's 100% on the manufacturers of the head units to make their systems work with CarPlay correctly.

Carplay in my 2016 GMC Canyon is buggy as hell... generally slow, Pandora freezes all the time, maps only change to night mode occasionally, sometimes during the day, Siri rarely gets my commands right, music stutters. Nothing is consistent. When it works it's great, but unfortunately, at least in experience it's not worthy of Tech of the year award... I would much prefer to be one of the people having a better experience. iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2
GMC blames Apple, Apple blames GMC.
