So, since my AT&T account was created my dad has been the account owner even though he doesn't use it. Unfortunately, he has work every day and can't be with me to get the new iPhone so I was wondering if there was any way I could change the account owner?

You do not need to be the account owner. He simply needs to add you as an authorized user.

Nope, I already am. That doesn't work. Apple stores require you to be the account owner to upgrade and sign a new two-year contract.

Yes you can do a change of account owner, however you will first need to have your dad to authorize the change. Then you will need to goto a AT&T Corp store and fill out a paper that says you take over financial liability for the account.

Does he have to be there in person to authorize it?

No, he does not. He can authorize the change over the phone, then you just need to go in and sign the paperwork to take over.

You can start the process online and yes, there is a $36 fee Transfer of Billing Responsibility (ToBR). There will be a credit check done for you, are you sure that you want to do through all this trouble?

You might want to try that Apple store again, there have been may reports of them allowing Retail Authorized Users to upgrade or add a line to the account. It does not hurt to call first. :)

    Thanks.

I've had this problem before though, trying to upgrade a phone at the Apple store and being turned away. I've told them I'm an authorized user, and they said the account holder has to be present.

That's weird. Both my friend and I both went and did everything and it didn't matter who was an authorized user or account owner. They simply ask for the last four of the account owner's social and the other standard info. I'd say it's store-by-store, but they all use the same PoS system (I would assume), so I have no idea why it'd be different.
