iChat has Rendezvous chatting, but I bet not many people (if any) use it.

So if the other people have Rendezvous, then i could chat with them because they are on the same network?

Right. Rendezvous is the zero-conf networking protocol that iTunes uses.

I haven't tried it, but I assume they'd have to get Bonjour working too.

Anyone close by with a Mac you could try this out with?

Oh, and for the record, I've had a bit of trouble on most public networks getting the iTunes sharing to work since I think the IT guys have probably somehow disabled it. Hopefully they won't have done the same with your network and iChat.

The thing is most of the people you are sharing music with are using PC's. Bonjour through iChat does not have a PC counterpart. If you know a Mac user on the network, try asking them to go on iChat with Bonjour/Rendezvous activated and see if they become online on your Bonjour/Rendezvous list.

You can get Bonjour for Windows. Does anyone know if that'd help, somehow?

PC types can use rendevous for chat, but only if they are using a chat program that supports. The only one that I know of is Trillian.
